Description

The position requires a researcher of great promise who will add to and complement the intellectual achievements of the current Musicology faculty, and whose research interests include theoretical, historical, or practical approaches to the study of musical industries, broadly defined, and the cultural issues they raise, such as: formations of identity and capital; global vernacular cultures; organology, technology, and innovation; venues, cities, tourism, and migration; mass media culture, intellectual property rights, social economies of music production, etc. The successful candidate will demonstrate aptitude for, and, ideally, have some experience working with academic programs in music industry, technology, business, or sound production.

All applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Musicology or related field in hand by June 2020. Applicants are also expected to have a well-developed research agenda and should be prepared to teach a wide variety of musical subjects at the graduate, undergraduate, and general education levels. Relevant professional experience in the music industry, though not a requirement, may also be considered.

The Department of Musicology, one of three departments comprising the new UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is a leading program in its discipline worldwide. The Department administers the Alpert School's free-standing Minor in Music Industry, open to all UCLA students, and is preparing to launch a departmental B.A. in Music History and Industry. The department expects robust growth in this area, and seeks an innovative, dynamic educator to help guide it in collaboration with current faculty.

The University of California and the Department of Musicology seek to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. Strong preference in the current search will be given to candidates whose work on the music industry directly engages social justice issues such as access, equity, representation, and control of intellectual property.
