The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching & Learning (VPTL) is seeking a System Administrator to provide technology support and services to further the University's academic mission.

This position will be responsible for day to day administration of our Windows and Linux servers, Virtualization infrastructure and all supporting hardware and software systems. This is a very hands-on position. He or she will be providing server side infrastructure support and work closely with our software development, desktop support, cluster, networking teams to insure a superior experience for students, faculty and staff as they interact with teaching and learning technologies on campus and online.

Under general direction, develop, install, configure, optimize, and maintain integrity of the operating system environment


  • Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot operating system to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Resolve difficult system problems and provide consultation or training.
  • Configure and assist in the design of system and network security.
  • Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.
  • Train personnel who provide support and consulting services to users.
  • Act as liaison with various departments across campus.
  • Facilitate vendor relationships.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with multiple types of operating systems or expert knowledge in one.
  • Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.
  • Extensive experience in multiple programming languages for system development.
  • Experience with networked environments.
  • Experience with network storage solutions.
  • Experience with configuring and maintaining routers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals.
  • Experience with middleware and infrastructure.

  • Strong Linux System Administration preferably CentOS, Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise, and VMWare ESXi
  • Experience in Windows Server Administration as well as expertise in virtualization with Hyper-V
  • Experience with implementing , troubleshooting, and supporting Web application servers such as Apache, Tomcat, and IIS
  • Experience in Amazon Web Services. Deploying, automating, managing AWS cloud based applications, to ensure the availability, performance, scalability and security of production systems. Build, release and configuration management of production systems
  • Experience in database administering such as MySQL, MSSQL, and Oracle databases
  • Expertise with current storage technologies including CIFS, NFS, DASD, NAS, AFS, and TSM
  • Demonstrated ability in Shell and other scripting languages to develop or modify tools to automate system administration tasks
  • Experience working with version control systems, such as Git
  • Demonstrated ability to apply information security tools and best practices to secure University systems, accounts, and data
  • Experience with Stanford's computing infrastructure, tools, protocols, and system administration standards including proven proficiency in Kerberos, Active Directory, LDAP, SSL and certificates
  • Programming experience in Python and familiarity with the Django framework
  • Experience in administration and print server maintenance
  • Experience with administering and maintaining disk imaging servers
  • Experience with general software development cycle phases, including requirements specification, modeling, system design , database development, documentation , and maintenance

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>40 pounds.
