Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (CLIE) is the student affairs division of the University of Denver. CLIE includes Housing and Residential Education, Academic Resources, Student Engagement, Health and Counseling, and the Center for Multicultural Excellence.

The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) is a nationally recognized fee-for-service program that provides individualized academic support for University of Denver students with a history of learning differences, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The mission of the LEP is two-fold; to support and serve students and to serve as a resource to the DU community. The LEP works with the greater University to expand the definition of Inclusive Excellence to include neurodiverse learners.

Position Summary

The LEP Academic Counselor provides academic support to a caseload of students with a history of learning differences, ADHD, or autism spectrum disorder. The academic counselor meets weekly with each student on their caseload and their time with the student is centered on the Four Cornerstones of LEP: Self Awareness, Self-Advocacy, Self-Determination, and Accountability. The academic counselor supports and participates in other LEP functioning such as JETT pre-orientation program, Social Skill Building activities, Eye to Eye, etc. as well events and trainings through the CLIE division. The academic counselor attends staff and supervision meetings and professional development opportunities.

For the benefit of our students, relationships with faculty and other campus partners it is an expectation that members of our team have a desire to remain within our department for a minimum of 2 years.

This is a 9 month, exempt, benefitted position.

Essential Functions

  • Academic Learning:
    • Provide inclusive academic learning and development strategies to an assigned caseload of students with a history of learning differences, ADHD, including students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  • Education and Training:
    • Actively engage in professional development at the university, division, and departmental levels.
    • Conduct trainings on UDL, executive functioning, time management, organization, working with students with learning disabilities, learning styles, study skills, stress and anxiety, etc.
  • Campus Collaboration:
    • Work with faculty and staff educators to create equitable access to learning by sharing strategies and resources on how to work with students with learning differences
  • Administration Duties:
    • Participation in assessment including data collection (surveys), analyzing results, and writing for the final report.
    • Respond to emails/voice messages and enter banner student notes within 24 hours.
  • Special Projects and Other Duties as assignments:
    • Participation in JETT and LEP orientation, Eye to Eye and the ADDventure Conference, Prospective Student Visits, Social Skill Building events.
    • Support assessment initiatives that promotes program growth with a direct impact on student persistence.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and other disabilities and how they impact learning.
  • Strong ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies, assessment tools, and study skill development.
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a professional team.
  • Ability to develop positive and meaningful relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and their families.
  • Ability to provide support to students experiencing crisis (emotional, mental, physical).
  • Experience with handling confidential information.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in psychology, special education, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with students with learning differences in an academic environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in psychology, education, special education, counseling.
  • 2+ years of experience working with college students with learning differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and counsel college students in a higher education environment.
  • Specialized training in learning disabilities

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Range:
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
