Job Description PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):  With special attention to the needs of traditionally underrepresented groups (e.g., low-income, first-generation, transgender, gender non-conforming), the Trainer/Facilitator will partner with Smith leadership to help shape, design and facilitate diversity and inclusion orientation and trainings across Smith for students, staff and faculty. Collaborate with the VP of Inclusion and Equity and key stakeholders, including those under the Provost’s Office, the Dean of the College and Human Resources. 

 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provide outreach, advice, training, strategic planning, thought leadership and resources to campus leaders on diversity and inclusion practices to assist faculty, staff and students in creating an inclusive campus community.

 

 

 

Lead trainings with targeted outcomes on such topics as identity, power and privilege, microaggressions, bias, bystander intervention, cultural capacity, inclusive pedagogy, diversity recruiting, hiring and retention practices, etc.

 

 

 

Recognize and respond to diversity and inclusion needs, issues and initiatives. Develop and implement education and awareness programs related to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. Create and facilitate opportunities to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion across campus.

 

 

 

Facilitate difficult conversations with staff, faculty and students related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

 

 

 

Serve as a resource for student organizations that meet the growing needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Provide additional support for multicultural student organizations. Highlight educational, cultural, and social programs from across campus that promote an inclusive campus community.

 

Develop metrics for measuring the effectiveness of Smith’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. Establish goals and monitor progress. Report results to senior management.  Support areas by creating plans to remedy deficit areas.

 

Maintain current knowledge of programs of diversity and inclusion, including via contact with professional organizations and learning conferences.

 

 

 

Perform other duties as assigned in order to ensure success of diversity and inclusion initiatives.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/ Experience: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required plus a minimum of three years of related experience, including preparation and implementation of training materials and diversity initiatives or an equivalent combination of education and experience; master’s degree preferred.

 

 

 

Skills: Demonstrated commitment and successful track record in training in the area of diversity and inclusion education and outreach. Professional expertise as a facilitator in fostering diversity and inclusivity in higher education and capable of facilitating meetings and discussions among the students, staff, faculty. Demonstrated expertise in best practices in diversity, equity and inclusion. Proven ability to initiate and oversee major programs and initiatives in diversity, equity and inclusion. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to facilitate, mediate and train in area specific topics. Strong leadership and management abilities, as well as conflict management and advocacy skills. Ability to effectively handle information that is confidential and/or sensitive. Embrace an institutional culture of care, social justice, equity, and access. Experience in justice frameworks, social justice education and restorative practices would be an asset.
