Under the general supervision of the CommunicationStrategist, the incumbent conceptualizes, designs and executes creative forFaculty-wide promotional materials and/or campaigns, publications, external andinternal marketing pieces and individual advertisements to ensure a consistentbrand experience across all media. Oversees brand stewardship, including driving quality,unity and consistency of creative tone, voice and design of all projects.

The incumbent thrives in a creative,fast-paced, quality-driven, collaborative team environment. Working closely with the EngineeringStrategic Communications strategists and key project stakeholders, theincumbent leads creative development and design execution to address specificbusiness objectives, as defined by the project brief. The incumbent develops strategicplans, manages projects, coordinates project timelines and workback schedules, andcreates memorable and compelling brand experiences for a wide range ofaudiences — taking into account positioning, strategic messaging and the officialvisual identity of the Faculty and broader University.

In the absence of the Communication Strategist,the Graphic Designer & Project Coordinator liaises with project stakeholdersto ensure timely production of marketing communications projects and materials.The incumbent is required to apply sound judgment andconsultative skills to working in a matrix environment withmulti-dimensional points of view.

The incumbent also maintains backupdrives of all audio, visual and design files as a comprehensive archive ofEngineering Strategic Communications projects.



Campus

Education:

Bachelor's degree in communication and design or art ordesign/art major such as fine art, visual communications, digital media orrelated field or equivalent work experience. Registered Graphic Designerdesignation preferred.


Experience:

Minimum of five years in graphic design capacity (agency orin-house experience or similar preferred), or an acceptable combination ofeducation and experience.

Experience ineducation, institutional or non-profit communications is preferred.


Core experience in preparing visual prototypes (e.g. sketches, comps) a must;proven ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale.

Expertise using Creative Cloud applications, inparticular InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and Acrobat. Proficientin Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Power Point and Excel). Works in aMac environment, and is familiar with PC. Skilled in photography and comfortableusing a digital camera.

Experienceworking on comprehensive, multi-channel campaigns, including: ads, printmaterials, event collateral, experiential marketing efforts, video, social mediaand other online applications. Experience in designing graphic elements forwebsites, apps and social media. Provenskills in retouching and colour correction of images.

Demonstrated experience as a seasoned presenter ofcreative concepts and ideas across a variety of project partners andstakeholders.


Exceptional project management skills and experiencerequired.

Must be extremely knowledgeable of pre-press and printing process, as well astypes of ink, paper stock and other supplies used, their characteristics andlimitations.

Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright laws relative to the use of graphicand textual materials. Online experience working with WordPress a plus.

Highly creative, professional andcollaborative individual who has experience combining design sensibility,technical skill and problem-solving and organizational ability to support the Faculty’sdiverse design needs.

Must relish creative challenges, brainstorming potential concepts independentlyand with colleagues and executing campaigns using multiple programs. Has workedcollaboratively with external design firms, consultants, photographers,illustrators, writers and freelance designers, and can follow or help todevelop creative briefs, take direction and create multiple design options, adeptat generating fresh and original strategic and creative approaches.

Must possess the ability to interpret and anticipate creative needs for acampaign or design project. Must demonstrate informed knowledge about layout,composition, colour theory and typography. Must show strong strategic andconceptual skills, combined with keen attention to detail, deadlines andquality control.

Proven ability to be both an excellent strategist and flawless tactician.Attention to detail is critical, as is careful preparation prior to stakeholdermeetings and presentations. Incumbent will have an opportunity to workalongside practitioners from many other disciplines (e.g., writers/editors,web, media relations). Incumbent must be articulate and collaborative in allinteractions and demonstrate genuine passion and enthusiasm for Facultyprojects and initiatives.


Keyboarding speed and accuracy skills essential. Experiencewith Canadian Press stylebook and ability to proofread own work well andexceptional time-management skills required. Proven deadline-driven mentality;thrives in a fast-paced environment. Stellar multi-tasking skills, initiativeand ability to remain well-organized under pressure. Ability to anticipate andsupport needs of multiple internal stakeholders. Must be able to work flexiblehours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
