Position Summary:

The Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a national and international leader in basic and applied aspects of insect biology, and has expertise ranging from molecular and sub-organismal biology to applied ecology. A core strength of the department is in public health and medical entomology. We are home to the Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease, a regional hub for training and research related to vector-borne diseases of humans. We seek to further develop that strength with a new position in disease ecology, epidemiology, and modeling.

Principal Duties:

This position is a tenure-track nine-month appointment at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor (approximately 80% research, 20% instruction). The position carries a commitment to the three important functions of resident instruction, research, and outreach, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to Faculty rank.

We seek to hire an Epidemiologist/Vector Ecologist with strengths in modeling infection dynamics, population ecology and/or disease evolution in a changing world. Research areas that would be appropriate for this position include disease ecology, epidemiology, drivers of emerging infectious diseases (including global change), pathogen interactions at multiple scales (within host, population, community, and regionally) and how they influence the emergence and transmission of infectious disease. The ideal candidate would use mathematical models, computational simulations, and/or statistical analyses to understand the dynamics of vectors and pathogens on multiple spatial and temporal scales, with a particular emphasis on arthropod-vectored pathogens of humans.

The candidate is expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate instruction. They will be responsible for teaching in an introductory course in Global Health and a second course in their specific area of interest and will provide leadership for the Global Health Major and Certificate. All of our faculty contribute to our graduate seminar series and mentor undergraduate students in independent studies. The candidate would be expected to train graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.

The successful candidate will develop a strong, independent, extramurally funded research program; develop an innovative undergraduate and graduate teaching program; build collaborative relationships in research and instructional programs; and contribute to service and outreach functions of the Department, College, University and professional societies. As such, post-doctoral experience is highly desirable and preference will be given to candidates that present evidence of excellent teaching skills, a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and success in attracting extramural funding.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD in a Biological Science, Applied Mathematics, or related field, with expertise in vector-borne disease ecology, entomology or modeling required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Associate Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials suitable for appointment with tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a sustained record of professional achievement as indicated by outstanding teaching, sponsored research and publications, and demonstrated leadership activities in the field.
