Appointment: Regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) position Position Summary: The manager of grounds and automotive ensures the overall maintenance, health and beauty of the campus grounds. This position will design, plan and coordinate landscape improvements using information on available plant material, available level of maintenance and the landscape master plan. The manager establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of department and campus community.Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Maintain the health and beauty of trees and shrubs using the ability to evaluate the process from a horticultural and arborist's perspective. This shall include, but not be limited to, chemical applications, weed removal, fertilization, watering, wrapping young trees, pruning and removal of trees and shrubs.
- Maintain the health and beauty of the turf, to include athletic fields and setup of athletic fields, from the perspective of the need for a functional, low maintenance, manicured turf, and striping.
- Identify problems in the turf and remedy through the application of fertilizer, surfactant, herbicides or pesticides. This also includes, but is not limited to, mowing, edging sidewalks and shrub beds, watering, sod replacement, and filling holes.
- Install and maintain annual and perennial flowers, trees and shrubs, in compliance with approved design.
- Oversee collection and disposal of trash.
- Supervise various numbers of full-time and part-time groundskeepers, trash workers, recyclers, student labor and temporary labor as staff. Supervision shall include, but not be limited to, hiring, planning, scheduling, performance evaluation, creating an inclusive and team environment, organizing work, implementing and inspecting various landscape maintenance and landscape improvement duties, alteration, and preventative maintenance of over 94 acres of grounds.
- All work may include work performed by staff and/or contracted labor.
- Supervise and perform duties of maintaining the equipment common to the trade. This shall include, but not be limited to lubricating, cleaning, and sharpening blades, tune-ups, adjustment, and preventive maintenance.
- Coordinate and assign all work orders received from students, faculty and staff. Assist with requests if they can be fulfilled by grounds.
- Work with various committees and groups concerning campus ground issues, including campus planning groups, Board of Trustees, and Budget Task Force issues.
- Assist parents, alumni and campus community concerning ground issues or improvement initiatives
- May work with various contractors for internal and external issues, projects, etc.
- Assist building officials and state inspectors when needed.
- Perform ground inspections for condition and determine needed repair work, scheduling within budget limits or developing cost estimates for work beyond the capabilities of staff or funding.
- Investigate complaints from customers and others: develop cost effective solutions and take appropriate action.
- Assist in development of multi-year maintenance plan.
- Maintain shop inventory to include ordering etc.
- Prepare written safety work plans, job schedules.
- Watch for safety to staff as well as that of campus population in the proximity to the work place, taking action to assure code compliance and prevent injury or accidents. Hold regular safety trainings as well as job-preview meetings with workers to identify potential risks in collaboration with the departmental safety coordinator.
- Arrange for contract work and outside support as needed; develop specifications, schedules, etc., as required. Make arrangement to show project work to bidders, screen bids to assure they comply with the job specifications and that proposals are equal. Recommends successful bidder.
- Oversee and inspect work performed by contractors to ensure a professional quality of work is performed. This includes ensuring job and specification compliance, job safety, inspecting work, preparing deficiency lists, working with contractors for follow-up before recommending payment of contract.
- Interpret and use drawings, landscape drawings and operational manuals.
- Ensure vehicle and lift inspections are up to date and that vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and working order.
- Oversee budget to maintain vehicle fleet and equipment.
- Assist in specking new equipment for purchase by Facilities Services.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Oversee approximately 11 grounds and automotive staff and 8 or more student staff members.
- As the supervisor, this position will work as a team member in providing services and support to all areas. This is accomplished through regular meetings and interpersonal relationships in support of the overall strategic objectives.
- In support of the mission and strategic goals of the university, the manager is responsible to develop, sustain, and continually assess and improve the effectiveness of Facilities Services.
- Identify and participate in resolution of departmental/institutional challenges with continuous quality improvement as a goal.
- Work collaboratively with the Facilities Services team in support of our mission.
- Participate in staff meetings, other meetings, and professional development/training workshops and seminars.
- Promote and support a professional environment that welcomes students, faculty, staff, and vendors, and enables them to access our services in an encouraging, organized, effective, and helpful way.
- As a member of the Facilities leadership team, this position is responsible for developing direct reports, managing and measuring work, and building an effective team.
- The manager, in coordination with HR and the associate vice president, will hire, train, conduct performance reviews, take corrective action, provide positive rewards and feedback, and respond to complaints. This includes upholding the standards in the Code of Conduct and other university policies, modeling professionalism in all interactions, and respectfully hearing staff input and concerns either directly or from Human Resources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read blueprints and execute designs
- Ability to evaluate and make decisions regarding quality of work

- Basic mechanical knowledge of vehicles & equipment
- Basic understanding of hydraulics
- Ability to use a computer and digital/film cameras
- Ability to work with the following equipment, plus all associated ground equipment including, but not limited to: shop hand and power tools, portable two-way radios, mowers & edgers, tractors, gators and forklifts Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
- Associates degree in Horticulture or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of experience and education considered
- Washington State driver's license or the ability to get one as required
- 10 years of experience in ground and landscape maintenance, including athletic field experience
- 2 years of supervisory experience
- Horticultural and Arborist training
- Pesticide training and license
