Overview

Reporting to the Director of Athletics or designee, the incumbent will be responsible for the administration of an NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country program to: ensure the health, well-being and academic success of the student-athletes; develop the competitive nature of the Track and Field and Cross Country program to the top of the Mountain West Conference with consistent participation in NCAA post-season competition, and; negotiate and secure a strong meet schedule that includes an element of competition versus highly successful Division I programs.

Compensation

The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Position Summary
  • Plan and direct the training and performance of team members.
  • Recruit and retain high quality student-athletes.
  • Ensure that the program complies strictly to all NCAA, Mountain West, University and Athletics Department rules, policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches in the performance of their duties.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress.
  • Properly administer the sport budget.
  • Occasionally assist in activities relating to fundraising and community service.
  • Promote intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the university.
  • Cooperate professionally with all members of the university community and media.
  • Support the department's commitment to gender equity and diversity.
  • Perform all usual and standard duties of a Division I head coach.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and a history of rules compliance.
  • Proven track record of recruitment and retention of high-quality, successful student-athletes.
  • History of success as a coach as evidenced by team success, as well as individual accomplishments by student-athletes under tutelage.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with student-athletes, administrators, support staff and community groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and project a professional approach and attitude.

Required Education and Experience:

    Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education which is accredited by one of the six US regional accrediting associations or by an equivalent international institution of higher education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in coaching Track and Field and Cross Country at the junior college and/or collegiate level.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Track and Field/Cross Country coaching experience at the Division I level.
