UNC Asheville, the designated public liberal arts institution of the University of North Carolina system, invites applicants for a position as a Teaching and Research Fellow in chemistry. This position is designed for individuals who hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field and intend to pursue academic careers at primarily undergraduate institutions. Responsibilities of this position include mentoring undergraduate students on research projects, teaching undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in chemistry, and performing research and laboratory managerial tasks in support of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Amanda Wolfe. We seek applicants who are enthusiastic about undergraduate education with classroom and/or laboratory teaching experience, and are highly motivated researchers capable of leading a project and training undergraduates in designing and performing experiments, collecting and interpreting data, troubleshooting and solving problems in the laboratory, preparing publications, and presenting results at conferences. Candidates receiving strongest consideration will demonstrate enthusiasm for undergraduate education and the capability of working with a multidisciplinary team of faculty and undergraduates to further its research goals.This position is expected to last 12 months with a one-year renewal option.

Ph.D. in chemistry or related field prior to start date and no later than January 1, 2020. In addition to a Ph.D. the preferred candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: medicinal chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and/or natural product isolation as they relate to antibiotic discovery and development. The preferred candidate will have a degree in the appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of appointment. The candidate will be expected to teach courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, associated laboratories, and/or other courses related to the UNC Asheville Liberal Arts Core under the guidance of the PI. Candidates are desired who are enthusiastic for mentoring under-represented students with an interest in pursuing studies in chemistry and careers or post-graduate studies in this or a related field.
