“Assessment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)”

 

The University of Virginia, College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences seeks applicants for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position to participate in the “Assessment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)” project sponsored by the Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation (CGII: https://globalinquiry.virginia.edu/), the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (http://as.virginia.edu/), and the East Asia Center (EAC: http://eastasiacenter.as.virginia.edu/).   Over forty faculty members from multiple departments across schools at the University have formed collaborative working groups to address topics such as the historical antecedents of BRI; the political, economic and environmental impact; the ethics and governance of BRI; and the future of global smart cities. The interdisciplinary and cross-regional project Post-doctoral Research Associate will:

  • Help coordinate interdisciplinary activities across working groups; help define intellectual direction of the broader project; help make the project visible across various media platforms.
  • Conduct research on her/his own specialty as related to BRI and in relation to project working groups.
  • Teach one class on BRI in an area of her/his own specialization.

Appropriate research and mentoring support will be provided, including faculty mentoring from the home department of the Research Associate’s own discipline. In addition to the home department, the Post-doctoral Research Associate will be associated with CGII and the East Asia Center.

 

Qualification Requirements: a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment is required. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research, experience in and evidence of achievement in field(s) relevant to BRI studies, and a desire to expand scholarly efforts researching BRI. Having a working language in addition to English is preferred.

Applicants of all fields will be considered, with the following areas particularly encouraged: economics, environmental science, politics, and sociology. Regardless of discipline, applicants should be strongly oriented to interdisciplinary work.
