The NWI is a unique, interdisciplinary hub dedicated to research, innovation and science for engineered fabrics and the hub of an innovative global partnership between industry, government and academe. The NWI faculty, staff, and students work closely with partners within the nonwoven complex and beyond, and the Institute hosts the world’s first accredited academic program for the interdisciplinary field of engineered fabrics. Based on NC State’s world-renowned Centennial Campus, the NWI has established unique state-of-the-art capabilities for product development, pilot manufacturing, analytical services, and materials testing, to address the diverse needs of the nonwovens industry. NC State seeks applications for the Steve and Frosene Zeis Term Professor of Distinction within the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science in NC State’s Wilson College of Textiles. The successful candidate will also serve as Deputy Director of the NWI, and possess an outstanding, internationally recognized record of accomplishment in a research area relevant to nonwoven products and processes.
The NWI in concert with the Wilson College of Textiles seeks a Deputy Director to carry forward the NWI in its mission as a university-industry research consortium. The Deputy Director works closely with NWI Research Scientists, Research Fellows and the NWI Industrial Advisory Board to identify key areas of research in support of industry technology and to establish short-range and long-range goals in pursuit of the mission of NWI.
Candidates will contribute positively to the mission of the Nonwovens Institute (NWI) and strengthen programmatic links to fiber and polymer science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and cellulose/paper science and engineering. Successful candidates will be innately collaborative, will maintain an externally funded research program, and will work to enhance the mission, vision, and values of the NWI (https://thenonwovensinstitute.com) and NC State.
NC State seeks individuals with the following characteristics:
1. Research scholars with active research programs, the desire to train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and manage a productive and safe laboratory. Successful candidates will secure extramural funding and communicate research findings in peer-reviewed and other scholarly publications as well as at local, national, and international meetings. Particular research areas of interest include fiber and polymer science and engineering, filtration and separation, fluid mechanics, biomechanical engineering, soft materials, micro and nano-science, as well as related and/or complementary areas. It is essential that candidates seek and value a collaborative environment.
2. Educators dedicated to teaching excellence in areas relevant to Nonwovens Science and Engineering. Candidates will be student-centric and dynamic in the classroom, and will participate actively in didactic program assessment and accreditation. The primary teaching responsibility for this position will be appropriate for the candidate’s background and department affiliation.
3.Individuals that will support the recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students, serve on departmental, college, and university committees, as well as be active participants in professional societies and organizations.
4.Leaders who have the capacity to learn, and contribute to building, the NWI business model and to represent NWI with other University leaders to both advance the NWI vision and mission, and ensure compliance with University policies and State Laws. Candidates must extend this leadership to growing collaborations between industry, academics, and government, as well as the growth of NWI industry membership and investment in research at NWI and NC State by industry and the federal government, including both basic and applied research.

Candidates must have credentials consistent with the rank of Full Professor with tenure in an accredited institution or meeting the standard of Professorial rank within NC State’s Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS). The candidate will have achieved (or earned) national and/or international recognition for excellence in their field of research and the candidate will be expected to maintain this reputation through significant and regular contributions to the field. The candidate must have a doctorate in fiber and polymer science, engineering or in a closely related field, or an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience credentials and experience appropriate for a position as a tenured Full Professor.Departmental Required Skills
