The Learning Spaces & Services Department provides dynamic services, spaces, and technologies to enable all forms of learning, discovery, and research. The department has overall responsibility for learning spaces including makerspaces, digital media labs, virtual reality lab and studio, and other active learning environments. The department provides online learning content, chat and face-to-face help on demand, and engagement with undergraduate research and other student-centered programs at the university. Responsibility for the Libraries’ extensive and growing program of teaching and learning spans departments and is managed collaboratively by the Learning Programs Working Group. A network of learning program partners across the university includes the Office of Faculty Development, the Graduate School, Distance Education and Learning Applications (DELTA), academic departments, and other units focused student success and on supporting researchers across the lifecycle of research and scholarship.

Essential Job Duties

This position serves as University Library Specialist in the Learning Spaces & Services department (second shift). The incumbent collaborates with library colleagues and teaching faculty to design and deliver innovative library teaching and learning experiences, programming, and outreach. These include producing distance education materials, instructional videos and supplementary web­ content, and supporting other instructional programs. The Library Specialist works with library colleagues to support their needs and development as teachers, including serving on working groups and committees that advance teaching and learning in the Libraries.

The Library Specialist also provides service at the Ask Us center to students, faculty, and other researchers. In addition to in ­person assistance, they provide remote reference assistance through instant messaging service, respond to email inquiries, and handle occasional in-depth research requests. They assist library users with strategies to identify and use library resources, help users to solve problems, and explain and interpret library policies to students, faculty, and visitors from the community.

This position independently exercises judgment and assists in ensuring the safety and security of people and materials in a high­-volume, high­-technology research library. With others, this position coordinates student employee recruiting, scheduling, supervision, and development activities to advance the level of patron services. The position supports other departmental initiatives as required.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or High School diploma or equivalency and five years of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
