The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education seeks a postdoctoral research associate in STEM Education. The Postdoctoral Research Associate - STEM trains with a research team on an NSF-funded research grant entitled “Developing Teaching Assistants' Pedagogical Knowledge of Inquiry Science Teaching & Instructional Leadership Skills and Assessing the Impact on Student Learning". This project develops, and implements Project Based Guided Inquiry labs in introductory chemistry, physics and biology lab courses. The project is also studying the development of TAs’ pedagogical knowledge for inquiry instruction and its impact on student learning in science labs. This position is full-time including full benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Design and Implementation: Works with supervisor and project team to improve research design skills and knowledge of research methodology. Assist research team in developing and implementing Project Based Guided Inquiry labs in chemistry, physics and biology introductory lab courses.
  • Workshop Development, Data analysis and reporting: Works with supervisor and project team to expand data driven research skills and experience. Works with Teaching Assistants, and researchers to collect data; assists with the development of professional development workshops and leads workshops for TAs. Collects and analyzes research project data. Helps supervisor and Co-PIs to prepare NSF annual project report.
  • Dissemination of project findings: Conduct literature reviews and work with supervisor and research team to write conference proposals and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals; and participates in presentations at conferences.

A doctoral degree in science education, STEM education, or related by the start date of the position. Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research experience is required.  Experience with undergraduate science lab settings and in TA training is preferred.  Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required, as is an attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and strong organizational skills are a must.

This is a one-year training appointment contingent upon NSF approval of budget revision.
