Description:

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions. Since its founding, the Department has systematically built clinical, research, and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine’s academic and clinical programs, the University, and the community. The mission of the Department is to deliver equitable, high quality, and high value primary care by partnering with patients, families, and communities to achieve optimal health; apply best evidence in person-centered care; generate and disseminate innovative research; and educate scholars and create leaders in family medicine and community health. The Department has strong interfaces with many of Penn’s Centers including the Center for Public Health Initiatives (CPHI), the Abramson Cancer Center, the Institute on Aging (IOA), and the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Additional opportunities for collaboration include the Leonard Davis Institute, the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, and the Penn Center for Innovation, among others.

The practice provides over 54,000 outpatient visits a year and admits approximately 5,000 inpatients, admitting adults primarily to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) and about 320 deliveries per year at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). In FY 2018, the department had over 20,000 active patients and more than 6,200 new patient visits. The practice is a component of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of the 18 clinical departments.

The Chair of the Department directs 33 faculty members and nearly 114 professional and support staff. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include PPMC and Pennsylvania Hospital, institutions of great distinction and diversity. In addition, the Department’s attending and resident physicians are an integral part of the care teams at 5 community clinics and PSOM students support 4 student-led community clinics.

Qualified candidates are those who hold MD, MD/MPH, or MD/PhD degrees and are qualified for faculty appointment as Associate or Professor level in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Applicants must be a respected active practitioner with a distinguished national/international record of research. Candidates should possess dynamic leadership skills, administrative expertise, and a clear commitment to – and excellence in – the education, sponsorship, and mentorship of students, residents, fellows and faculty. The applicant must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, as well as with the larger research community on campus, and to promote outreach to the community. The candidate should articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Penn Medicine Department of Family Medicine & Community Health, the role of a clinical department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the field of Family Medicine & Community Health in general. A strong interest in fundraising is desirable.

We seek candidates who embrace the value of diversity in the delivery of patient care and the enhancement of innovation in research.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.

All interested applicants are invited to send their curriculum vitae and letter of interest to the attention of Timothy R. Dillingham, MD, MS, Chair of the Search Committee, and must apply for this position online.
