POSITION:            JOB DEVELOPER / TRANSITION COACH               

LOCATION:          OFFICE OF GRANTS AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS/ YOUTH CORPS                   

RESPONSIBILITIES: To provide academic, career, and personal counseling to young high school dropouts who are participating in NJ Youth Corps program. The Job Developer/ Counselor is also responsible for assisting the corpsmembers with job or education placement and will be expected to provide follow-up services to all corpsmembers. This staff person may also assist in teaching all subjects needed to prepare students to take the GED examination.

  • 100% of time is spent on NJ Youth Corps
  • 50% of time is spent as a job developer
  • 25% of time is spent as a counselor
  • 25% of time is spent as teaching employability skills
  • The Job Developer may also be asked to teach and or supervise community service work with crews and classes as may be needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prepare an individualized career plan for all Youth Corps members. This plan will be based upon the results of the COPS Inventory System Schedule and conduct individualized personal and career counseling sessions with each corpsmembers at least twice a month Maintain counseling records Teach employability skills Schedule and conduct counseling seminars as they relate to student needs Meet with potential employers for job placement Place corpsmembers in jobs and or college or vocational schools Maintain follow-up records for all corpsmembers Assist corpsmember with completing college applications and financial aid Maintain a resource file of community agencies to assist corpsmembers Supervise a work crew as needed

EXPERIENCE : At least (1) one year of experience teaching high school or a GED preparation program or experience in corps programs or with urban students. Must have experience working in the business community.

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree or equivalency determined by the program’s administration and the University. Must have a NJ teacher certification or eligibility to receive certificate. Must possess skills in one or more of the following areas: teaching, museum education, graphic arts and design, carpentry, and emergency medical services. Must have a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and techniques essential to performance of assigned responsibilities Ability to acquire basic knowledge of the University’s policies and procedures Ability to establish cooperative working relationships and coordinate with other offices and organizations that impact on assigned responsibilities Knowledge of current job market trends for local region, state and nation The ability to implement a program with strategies and techniques that lead to employment for the grant’s population Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
