SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the instruction of up to 9 credits of courses and associated labs in the areas of surgical technology and other related topics for the Surgical Technology program, under the direction of the Division Chair and in coordination with the Program Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Provide instruction for assigned Surgical Technology Program courses (lab and/or lecture).
  • Conduct full laboratory preparation for assigned labs, including mock surgery exercises, preparing materials and setting up the laboratory to specifications.
  • Maintain the laboratory and instruments in clean and safe condition.
  • Provide clinical instruction and supervision of students in the clinical and lab settings.
  • Coordinate with program director/lead lab instructor to identify student-learning outcomes; develop process and tools for assessment; incorporate results in order to modify instruction and materials in the degree program.
  • Utilize non-traditional delivery methods including Internet and Internet Video Conferencing.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests, homework and skills assessments and submit grades to the program director/lead instructor on time.
  • Receive training in, and keep professional certification and skills current.
  • Maintain skills in the use of electronic and physical equipment and software necessary to accomplish teaching responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with their supervisor, college staff, students and the community.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below represent the minimum qualifications necessary for an individual to satisfactorily perform each essential duty and be successful in the position Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and Experience:

Must have at least a minimum of three years of full-time experience either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years. A minimum of an Associate’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must be a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or a Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop and teach introductory and upper-level Surgical Technology fundamentals and/or surgical procedures lecture and laboratory components, as needed in the classroom.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated peripherals and current version of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, Internet, and alternative delivery systems (e.g., internet and interactive video) at a proficient level.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including phone and copier

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk and use fingers and hands to keyboard or type and handle materials. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles or blood-borne pathogens and contaminants or other health threats. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Due to contractual requirements related to teaching in regional clinical facilities, employment is contingent on confidential review of National Background Check results.

Drug Screening

Drug screening may be required for some clinical facilities.

Work Schedule: Approximately 19 hours per week for fall and spring semester. Hours may vary depending on need.

Compensation: $30 hour. This position is not eligible for benefits.
