The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for two (2) Postdoctoral Scholar positions beginning September 2019.

The postdoctoral scholar position is in the broader area of physics and chemistry of disordered multiscale porous materials with emphasis on the computational geochemistry and chemistry of construction materials. The ideal candidate should have knowledge and background in one or a combination of the following fields:

  • Thermodynamics, intermolecular/surface forces and physical chemistry.
  • Computational quantum chemistry approaches for calculation of reaction paths and transition states between reactive agents and inorganic/organic host media.
  • Development and parametrization of transferable reactive and non-reactive interatomic force fields.
  • Classical reactive and non-reactive atomistic simulation of materials including energy minimization, molecular dynamics, and Monte Carlo methods.
  • Statistical physics approaches related to the enhanced sampling of rare events.
  • Development of thermodynamically-consistent coarse-grained modeling approaches for upscaling nanoscale intermolecular and surface forces to the mesoscale.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with Professor Mohammad Javad Abdolhosseini Qomi ( and research group to conduct federal and private-funded interdisciplinary research projects to address the pressing materials' physics and chemistry challenges in construction materials and subsurface processes relevant to the carbon sequestration and enhanced hydrocarbon recovery. Initial appointment will be for a 12-month, renewable subject to performance and continuation of project funding. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D., in civil engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, physical chemistry or a related field from an accredited university.
