Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of the Dean of the College of Human Sciences and Education. The Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the college. The Dean provides ultimate administrative oversight for all aspects of academic life within the college, including strategic planning, fiscal management, personnel development, academic programs, research enterprises and student enrollment. The Dean also has primary responsibilities for external initiatives that include community outreach and development.

About the College:

The College of Human Sciences and Education (CHSE) contains five parallel schools: School of Education (SOE), Leadership and Human Resources Development (SLHRD), Kinesiology (SOK), Library & Information Science (SLIS), and School of Social Work (SSW). The University Laboratory School (ULS) is also under the college umbrella, enrolling approximately 1,400 K-12 students. ULS was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2015. The college is home to the Early Childhood Education Laboratory Preschool (ECELP), which enrolls 175 children ages six weeks to four years old. The ECELP is a NAEYC accredited institution. CHSE offers 13 undergraduate degree programs and 18 graduate degree programs.  A total of 1,900 undergraduate and 1,120 graduate students are enrolled in these programs. The College of Human Sciences and Education is the 3rd largest college on LSU’s campus, with a total of 3,020 students. All units have nationally award-winning faculty and students.

The diversity of disciplines and activities within the College becomes very clear in the variety of professional organizations that accredit the schools: the American Library Association (ALA), the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA), the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America), and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Applicants and nominees must hold an earned doctorate; demonstrated success in teaching, research, administration, and service; proven leadership and management ability; excellent communication skills; an understanding of budgeting processes in a complex research university; an aptitude for fundraising; and an outstanding record that merits tenure in a school within the College of Human Sciences and Education.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to educational quality and scholarly excellence, a record of working with others collaboratively, a record of capitalizing on emerging opportunities, and commitments to putting students first, to collegiality, and to shared governance. Further, the successful candidate will have experience with and a commitment to community engagement and outreach.

The faculty, staff, and students in this college care about people and about making positive impacts in their lives. Therefore, the new Dean will encourage the College’s faculty, staff, and students to express their talents and their visions of the differences they can make.  The successful candidate will have a history of empowering others; he or she will thrive on promoting the work and potential of the faculty and students in the College while helping to develop a vision of the potential of the College. Viewing the diversity within the College as a strength, the new Dean must serve as facilitator and consensus builder among a diverse assemblage of disciplines and perspectives while appreciating and supporting the unique identities of the individual units.

In an era in which the delivery of higher education faces major changes, the successful candidate will have a history of embracing change, demonstrating the flexibility and creativity to manage it. The new Dean will serve as an articulate and zealous advocate of the College within the Higher Education community, locally, nationally, and internationally. In that vein, the successful candidate will have a talent for attracting and retaining good people which he or she will apply to support and expand the work of the College. The successful candidate will also have experience generating substantial dollars from external constituencies (fundraising, self-generated funds and grants).
