Job Details and Requirement:
The Director of News and Media Relations is responsible for managing the College’s relationship with the news media as well as playing a key role in improving the flow of information among campus constituencies. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications, the Director of News and Media Relations will be responsible for active engagement with journalists at all levels to advance the College’s institutional priorities and inform the public and campus community of key developments.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain strong relationships with journalists, including those in national news organizations and higher education media, to secure coverage of institutional priorities.
- Work with the Associate Vice President to manage crisis communications and respond to media inquiries.
- Develop channels for internal communication to ensure campus stakeholder awareness of key initiatives.
- Write campus news and feature content to support internal and external communications.
- Support faculty and administration in writing for general audiences, including op-ed writing and engagement with news media for coverage of research.
- Prepare faculty and leadership for media interviews.
- Provide media training to faculty and administration.
- Maintain close working relationships with student media to ensure accurate coverage of institutional practices, policies, and priorities.
- Maintain an understanding of key issues in higher education affecting CMC, private colleges, and colleges and universities broadly.
- Oversee policies on campus photography and filming.
- Other duties as requested.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a liberal arts discipline.
EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have 5-10 years related experience in media relations, preferably in higher education. Two or more years of experience as a news reporter or editor is preferred.
LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.
Superior news judgement and awareness of media deadlines, production schedules, and audiences.
Ability to perform in fast-paced, high-pressure, unpredictable environment.
Proven ability to establish credibility and influence with opinion leaders and journalists.
Ability to mentor colleagues in media relations best practices.
Deploy professional skills in internal institutional and public communications in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
Understanding of and ability to communicate the College’s identity, mission, and history as a selective residential liberal arts institution.
Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of employees.
Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software like Raiser’s Edge. Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving division/department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a full-time, 12 month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light (up to 20 lbs.)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position will supervise staff members as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications
