Claremont McKenna College seeks a skilled writer, editor, and creative professional to direct editorial content for the College’s communications and marketing platforms.  Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Communications, the Director of Public Affairs and Communications – Publications will oversee the College’s magazine and website feature content, and will play a key role in all College communications for both internal and external audiences.



  • Oversee the editorial content of the CMC Magazine
  • Manage budget, production, circulation, and distribution of CMC Magazine
  • Oversee editorial content for the website
  • Lead editorial content planning for college communications
  • Evaluates current communications channels and develops new ones to advance institutional priorities
  • Develop close relationships with senior leadership, faculty, students, alumni, and staff to produce the stories most relevant to the CMC community and public
  • Work closely with Advancement leadership to support fundraising communications goals
  • Work closely with the President’s office and events team to support college communications goals
  • Oversee content and production of the Currents news report
  • Oversee editorial planning for strategic video content
  • Manage staff writers
  • Manage contracted copywriters/editors
  • Manage and mentor student writers
  • Engage in all aspects of the creative process, including collaborating with photo, video, graphics and web design staff
  • Work with media relations staff to identify and promote key CMC stories
  • Assist the Associate Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications in overall management of the office, including budgeting and personnel matters
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a liberal arts discipline.

EXPERIENCE:  Five to seven years of relevant communications and public relations experience, including key responsibilities in overseeing a college or university magazine required. Three or more years of experience as a reporter or editor for a news organization is required.

LICENSES:  A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Understand and be able to communicate the mission and history of the College’s liberal arts environment.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Outlook and associated professional software such as, but not limited to, Adobe, PhotoShop, Raiser’s Edge, prospect research tools, Internet research tools and other social media network tools.
  • Must demonstrate strong project management skills and an ability to prioritize, juggle competing project and communicate priorities effectively. 
  • Must be able to meet deadlines, timelines, schedules, solve problems respond to others in a timely manner and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College and in support of the College’s strategic vision. 
  • Must be able to understand and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Demonstrate a high standard of integrity and ethics
  • Must be flexible, adaptable to change and willing to work on a wide range of projects as needs arise.
  • Able to think strategically and implement tactical initiatives in support of the College’s strategy.


HOURS:   The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required.  Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:  This is a full-time, 12 month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:                Light (up to 20 lbs.)                                                  

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  This position supervises student writers, contracted copywriters and editors.
