Job Description:


STRIVE is a long-established Federally-funded (TRIO) Student Support Services program, which has assisted many eligible students reach their goals at Holyoke Community College. The STRIVE Program has been in place at HCC for over 25 years and serves students who are "first-generation" college students, have a financial need (low income) and/or have a documented disability. The students in the Program reflect the rich cultural/ethnic diversity of the College's service area.


The Learning Specialist is responsible for identifying and facilitating academic support services for STRIVE students.


DUTIES:


  1. Provides academic planning, advising, and monitoring to a caseload of STRIVE students on retention, financial literacy, and transfer options.
  2. Works collaboratively with the Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services (OSD/DS) to review appropriate documentation and develop accommodation plans for STRIVE students with disabilities.
  3. Assists STRIVE students in identifying support services through OSD/DS, the CAPS Center, Career Services and other college programs and departments.
  4. Plans and provides workshops and activities on topics such as learning disabilities, study strategies, and personal skills including STRIVE Orientations and designated STRIVE courses.
  5. Coordinates STRIVE Mentor Program.
  6. Establishes confidential records and contributes to program record keeping system.
  7. Participates in all other operational aspects of the project, including program planning and development.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Services, or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience that includes learning disability services and/or disability assessment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; Demonstrated experience working with college students or experience in a community based/human services setting; Experience working with "First Generation to College," low-income, and students with disabilities; Experience working with a diverse population; Strong interpersonal, writing and computer software skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual (English/Spanish); Experience in higher education; TRIO experience; 1-3 years' experience using BANNER software; Background in assessment, career development, and financial counseling.


COMPENSATION: MCCC-Grade 5; Range: $47,000-$50,000 (10 month position); plus a comprehensive State benefits package


HOURS: 37.5 hours per week; Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. with occasional evenings and/or weekends.

Transfer

HCC has the highest transfer rate of any community college statewide, holding articulation agreements with more than 27 colleges and universities. Many students attend HCC with the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university. And many do so after graduating-often with generous and even full scholarships-to public and private four-year colleges and universities across the country. Locally, HCC is the largest feeder institution for Westfield State College and UMASS Amherst.
