Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Provost for Diversity & Director of Freshman Admissions, the Associate Director for Diversity Recruitment and Enrollment (ADRE) will manage and maintain ongoing recruitment and enrollment efforts to make the undergraduate student body more diverse, helping to foster an inclusive campus community that attracts and supports diversity in many forms. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with colleagues across the division of enrollment management to bring in the freshman class.

Essential Function

  • (50%) Serve as the primary contact for all recruitment and enrollment initiatives with regard to diversity.
    • Manage and supervise three direct reports in their roles as primary support for all diversity programs.
    • Oversee and encourage the involvement of staff support across enrollment management regarding diversity recruitment and enrollment initiatives.
    • Act as the final hiring authority for student-staff supporting the diversity team.
    • With direct support from the diversity team and extended support from across enrollment management, develop, coordinate and execute at least one signature program for the fall, spring and summer terms.
    • Develop and manage a strong suite of e-communication pieces in Slate, our departmental CRM, for the betterment of all diversity programs.
    • Enlist UMass Amherst students, faculty, staff and alumni to assist in programmatic efforts.
    • Manage assigned travel territories including high school visits, college fairs, community events and presentations. Foster relationships with secondary school personnel in college guidance. Evaluate the effectiveness of targeted travel to these majority-minority serving institutions by all recruitment staff and make recommendations for change.
    • Act as a resource for students and families navigating the college and financial aid application processes.
    • Conduct outreach and build partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs) geared toward serving underrepresented populations.
    • Liaise with on-campus partners falling within the Advocacy and Inclusion Cluster, especially the Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success (CMASS) to keep strong relationships and information flowing between their offices and Enrollment Management.
  • (40%) Serve as an active participant in the freshman admissions selection process.
    • Oversee and assist in the crafting of a diverse class by managing URM (underrepresented minority) enrollment targets by school and college.
    • Rely on data-driven decision-making to develop new and update existing diversity reading guidelines in support of providing access to historically marginalized and underrepresented students.
    • Review and evaluate admissions applications, including high profile and complicated cases with a focus on underrepresented students. Determine eligibility by evaluating the academic and non-academic credentials based on MBHE criteria and evaluating the difference among secondary schools.
  • (10%) Other Functions.
    • Serve in the absence of the Assistant Provost for Diversity & Director of Freshman Admissions on matters relating to diversity recruitment and enrollment of undergraduate students.
    • Keep abreast of pertinent developments at the university, in higher education and in the field of professional diversity admissions work.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education, multicultural education or a related field.
  • Five years of progressive experience in undergraduate student recruitment or in a diversity/recruitment related position.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience mentoring people who are new to the admissions field.
  • Sensitivity to multicultural and socioeconomic issues.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple projects while exhibiting professionalism and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the undergraduate experience at a major research university.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and to prioritize goals and formulate independent decisions regarding procedures and operations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the academic year, and the flexibility to work on weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Confident in the use of data and technology including social media.
  • Valid driver's license, proof of insurability.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education or related field.
  • Proficiency in Slate CRM.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish.

Additional Details

  • Incumbent reports to the Assistant Provost for Diversity & Director of Freshman Admissions.
  • Position functions with minimal supervision in performing job duties and responsibilities.
  • Works with others to formulate plans and objectives in accordance with overall statewide, university, and admissions goals.

Work Schedule

M-F, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Travel required, some evenings and weekend hours as necessary.
