Fundraising Development Writer
DescriptionThe Advancement operation provides the management and coordination of the back office functions to support the campus-based fundraising field staff. These include research, marketing and communications, gift processing, data base management, estate gift planning, and other services. These central services produce economies of scale by eliminating the need for these back office functions to be duplicated on each of the four campuses. They also place the institution in an optimal position to attract substantial support from the philanthropic sector.
The Development Writer plays a key role in producing advancement communications that focus on internal and external audiences, in service of the University of Colorado Office of Advancement. Much of this role imagines, creates, and produces a variety of written communication to inspire donors to make gifts benefiting CU. This includes nonprofit development writing for areas like Annual Giving and Gift Planning utilizing journalism-like features and storytelling. The Development Writer role also helps manage projects from conception to completion by interacting frequently with communications colleagues, internal partners, external constituents, faculty, students, and donors. This position reports to the Director of Marketing & Communication and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Write, edit, and research fundraising communications materials, including development/nonprofit solicitations and stewardship, feature stories and profiles, gift proposals, brochures, event collateral, presentations, and other various print and digital communications.
- Proofread and provide editorial suggestions on collateral produced by colleagues. Make changes and edits to existing pieces, often incorporating changes from multiple parties simultaneously.
- Help build a content and story library to support fundraising content projects.
- Employ strong storytelling and development-writing principles.
- Schedule, manage, and conduct interviews with internal and external constituents.
- Travel locally to and work independently at various locations to gather information for projects.
- Collaborate with fundraising colleagues to conceptualize and execute projects.
- Employ artistic talent that results in imaginative and pragmatic outcomes.
- Follow brand guidelines.
- Work with numerous campus partners and outside vendors to meet tight deadlines.
- Interact frequently with students, donors, and other outside constituents to complete research and project deliverables.
- Maintain a professional, amiable, and gracious attitude in all public interactions.
- Provide occasional administrative and logistic support for marketing and communications.
To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:
- Knowledge of communications and marketing best practices.
- Skilled in nonprofit and development writing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to write and edit compelling, clear, and accurate content for diverse audiences.
- Strong interview techniques and an ability to easily interact with diverse subjects.
- Ability to change writing style, voice, length, and tone to satisfy different objectives.
- Skilled in and ability to research content and generate ideas through interviews, web tools, and traditional shoe-leather reporting.
- Ability to tell stories across multiple channels, including web, email, print, events, and video.
- Knowledge of and skilled in AP style and/or Chicago style; strong adherence to grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with donors, staff, faculty, and students.
- Skilled in matching language with visuals to create appealing presentations.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and stay motivated in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently or collaborate as part of a team.
- Skilled in and ability to utilize Microsoft Office suite of software.

Salary: Salary for this position has been established at $50,000.

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent professional experience. (The educational requirement may be substituted for professional experience on a year-for-year basis.)
- Two (2) years of experience creating, writing, and publishing nonprofit or development content for donor audiences in areas like Annual Giving and Gift Planning.
- Two (2) years of project management experience related to communications or editorial products.
- Degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
- Experience researching and writing journalism-like storytelling features.
- Experience in marketing and communications in higher education.
- Professional experience with video, audio, and photography techniques.
- Experience interacting with donors or other VIPs.
