Detailed Description:

Instructional Technologist is responsible for online course building and development for the University of San Diego. Course Development includes constructing courses in the Learning Management System (LMS), and developing and producing any custom multimedia (i.e. graphics, video, animations, interactions, simulations, videos, podcasts, etc.). Produces communications and instructional materials using the web, audio, video, and other electronic media, which may involve writing, editing, designing, production and/or programming. Uses expertise in web design, user experience, and accessibility to produce course sites within online learning management systems. Demonstrates a deep understanding of industry best practices, campus policies, and quality standards. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods, technologies and techniques for constructing online courses. Receives general instructions and guidance in an open and collegial manner and exercises good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for course, program and instructional improvement. Fully knowledgeable in online learning strategies, technologies, and program development. This position receives supervision from the Manager, Learning Design Center.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Produces design and layout for a variety of online courses.

  • Under direction from the Manager, creates design and layout for online courses.
  • Constructs courses to include digital text, simulations, graphics, animation, and audio and video components.
  • Reviews and monitors user experience and makes appropriate recommendations and changes to course design elements.
  • Coordinates and implements online course delivery process improvement with campus constituents and stakeholders. Oversees quality assurance review process.
  • Leads departments technical strategy regarding enhancements and intergrations for the learning management system. Ensures LMS branding and theme are compliant with accessibility standards.

Meets and consults with Instructional Designers and clients (typically instructors and SME’s) on a variety of projects including moderately complex assignments, and develops, presents, and recommends interactive or multimedia elements and visual material.

  • Works with the Manager, Instructional Designer(s), and subject matter experts to understand the requirements, goals and needs of the online course content and its pedagogical value.
  • Takes responsibility for discovering the technological needs of the learning outcomes expressed, including working within USD’s specific technology environment. Coordinates with outside agencies and internal stakeholders on LMS issues and improvements, including integration issues with PCE student database and the campus LMS.

Maintains currency with emerging educational technology and other web-related trends (for example, accessibility issues); recommends and as directed, takes action to ensure compliance with regulations and consistency with USD campus standards.

  • Keeps current with accessibility issues, compatibility issues, and emerging technologies as appropriate for online learning materials and management systems. Collaborates with campus stakeholders to improve quality, user experience, and ensure ADA standards for online course builds. Provides leadership and direction for CDIL initiatives related to the LMS including theme and brand integration. Leads testing for LMS upgrades.

Other duties as assigned.

  • Provides LMS training to program areas as needed. Maintains portfolio of work examples. Organizes and tracks timelines for course builds, copies, training materials and process guides.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in instructional technology, web development or related area and one year of work experience.
  • An additional 2 years of related work experience in web development or related field may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Demonstrated technology skills and ability – LMS management, digital audio and video production, web programming, CSS, graphic design, motion graphics, web layout, and cloud storage management.
    i. Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, Responsive Web Design, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Captivate), PHP/SQL, Javascript, Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, and SCORM.
  • Strong attention detail and accuracy in all work products required.
  • Understanding of higher education, academic programs and requirements of a university.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability.

Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including skill to write in a clear and lively style.
  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work.
  • Thorough knowledge of content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for web site production, and campus-specific computer application programs.
  • Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the campus message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Thorough understanding of institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
  • Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, digital audio and video, image handling, motion graphics, graphic design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on an iterative project.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends in order to meet project deadlines. Must be able to work with all required technologies and tools.
