The Assistant Director of Employment manages the employment team for NOVA HR and has day-to-day oversight for the team’s responsibilities of successfully and consistently analyzing position descriptions and applicant pools in accordance with federal and state guidelines and NOVA and VCCS policies and procedures. This includes overseeing the team’s efforts in recruiting, selecting, and on-boarding new hires, as well as providing coaching and guidance to hiring managers to ensure policies and procedures are followed and business needs are met.
Duties and Responsibilities•Ensures all processes and programs adhere to applicable agency, state and federal laws and policies
•Serves as a highly experienced professional in employment to include coaching and consulting with managers to build strong relationships
•Ensures operations are consistent with the mission and values of both HR and the College.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in human resource management or closely related field. Several years of full-time professional-level human resources experience within employment or in an HRBP capacity. Demonstrated experience resolving complex employment issues. Experience supervising full-time staff, providing the appropriate tools and feedback to successfully perform duties.
Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in Human Resources or closely related field. SPHR and/or SHRM-SCP Certification. Previous work experience in higher education. Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying the Virginia Department of Human Resources Management (DHRM) and/or VCCS policies and procedures. Prior experience working with PeopleAdmin and PeopleSoft. Knowledge of multiple HR functions that are complementary to the hiring process. This includes compensation/classification, benefits, performance management and/or employee relations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities•Demonstrated success providing guidance and consultation to management, using a business partner approach to influence outcome and ultimately meet business needs while maintaining compliance.
• Knowledge of management principles involved in strategic planning, leadership techniques and coordination of people and resources.
•Advanced knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of human resource management
•Advanced knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to human resource management
•Advanced knowledge of state and agency policies and procedures related to human resource management
•Knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of human resources development, including group dynamics, teaming and problem solving;
•Knowledge of facilitation and presentation techniques;
•Knowledge of project planning and project management techniques;
•Ability to provide human resource consulting services in relevant areas;
•Solid ability to analyze data, solve problems and provide recommendations;
•Ability to develop recommendations, reports, studies and presentations;
•Strong negotiation skills
•Ability to guide, lead and supervise professional or administrative support staff;
•Highly developed skills in collaboration;
•Highly developed skills in oral and written communication.
•Ability to build and maintain relationships and develop strong, trusting relationships in order to partner with management to achieve optimal results.
•Must be well organized and be able to manage multiple, conflicting priorities.
•Ability to work in a fast pace, high volume environment.
•Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion and confidentiality
The selected candidate’s offer is contingent upon the successful completion of an extensive criminal background
investigation, which may include: fingerprint checks, local agency checks, employment verification, verification of
education, credit checks (relevant to employment), and other checks requested by the VCCS and NOVA such as
I-9 and E-Verify requirements. Additionally, selected candidates may be required to complete the Commonwealth’s
