Perform a variety of skilled tasks involved in maintenance, repair and renovations of campus buildings, hydronic systems, and equipment to include, but not limited to, underground piping system, building piping, fixtures, swimming pools, kitchens, sewers, acid waste piping, dilution basins, campus water main distribution systems, operation of boilers systems, and underground utility marking. The incumbent is subject to being on-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week on a scheduled basis. The position is also considered to be essential during emergency situations and the incumbent is subject to being requested to report to work. Employee will be on-call, on a rotational basis.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to supervisor. Perform duties and responsibilities with view toward energy conservation and department and college goals.
2. Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures
3. Lay out, fabricate and assemble piping and fixtures as required.
4. Transport materials, tools and equipment to work site and install and/or repair piping systems.
5. Clean, repair and maintain all of campus boilers and associated systems.
6. Install, repair, modify and maintain water, sewage, drainage, air, gas and vacuum systems, urinals, water closets, wash basins, sinks, drinking fountains, gas fired equipment including hot water/steam boilers, and processing tanks.
7. Adhere to asbestos abatement procedures.
8. Replace defective pipe by cutting, soldering, threading and assembling pipe.
9. Repair and/or replacement of building equipment (i.e. domestic hot water heaters, heat exchangers, pumps).
10. Review electrical diagrams and perform diagnosis and repairs.
11. Train and instruct work crews as assigned, inspect completed work to ensure compliance with established standards or required specifications.
12. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment; participate in making minor repairs to keep equipment operational; inform supervisor of all equipment needing major repair work.
13. Assist in ensuring security of vehicles, tools and other equipment.
14. Provide direction and assistance to outside contractors as directed.
15. Comply with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and the maintenance of a clean work area. Develop and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the campus community.
16. Participate in review and evaluation of existing modes of operation and recommend methods for increased efficiency and cost reduction.
17. Engage in a Professional Development plan. Participate in workshops, seminars, and training sessions to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations and changing technology Participate in meetings as directed.
18. Assume additional responsibilities as assigned and respond to calls for service, before, during, and after normal business hours as requested.
19. Have the knowledge and ability to perform underground utility marking by using an Underground Utility Locator. Mark all college owned underground utilities at various job sites for the purpose of damage prevention and Dig Safe NY Compliance.

Position/Job Qualifications

High school diploma and a minimum of 5 years or 10,000 hours work experience as a Plumber/Boiler Mechanic. Familiarity with regulatory codes, schematics and blueprints, and able to perform installation and repair of piping systems. Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and the ability to lift and carry 80 lbs. Experience and ability to operate a variety of power/hand tools and testing devices, a valid Driver’s License and adherence to the requirements set forth by the Office of Risk Management, and the ability to respond to calls twenty four hours per day seven days per week is required.
