Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

High School graduation plus two years of college coursework in an appropriate scientific field and a minimum of two years work experience in a maintenance, machine shop, inventory management, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field (e.g. Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biological Sciences) and two years of work experience in a laboratory environment located within an institution of  higher education.  The candidate can demonstrate proven laboratory techniques and has a working knowledge of proper techniques related to chemical handling, storage, and hazardous waste disposal.  General knowledge of laboratory safety practices and University of Minnesota rules and regulations.  Proven efficacy in working with a team of diverse backgrounds, age, education, and socioeconomic status.  Is able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the University of Minnesota Rochester’s  goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate by advancing equity and diversity.

Overview:
This position will primarily be located in the newly constructed One Discovery Square building located in downtown Rochester, within two to four blocks of University Square and 318 Commons.  Primary responsibilities include the support and coordination of activities at One Discovery Square related to the undergraduate chemistry instructional laboratory.  Secondary responsibilities include support of laboratory operations at 318 Commons, and serving as backup Laboratory Services Coordinator at University Square when there is a need.  This position will work largely in an unsupervised manner; which means that the qualified candidate will be able to work independently with minimal supervision.  However, this position will work within a team environment, which will include faculty and peer/supervisory staff.  Expectations of job performance are high, and responsibilities may increase with experience and time worked.  Hours of work are somewhat regular on a semester basis, but may require flexing work time within any given weekday not to exceed 40 hours in any one work week. 

 

Essential Functions: 
Provide direct support to the delivery of instruction and teaching/learning research in the undergraduate science courses at the University of Minnesota Rochester.

  • Manage Laboratory Prep Room and maintain inventory of consumable and non-consumable stock to meet the needs of the academic and teaching/learning research missions of the University of Minnesota Rochester; including possible procurement of consumable and non-consumable goods and equipment for laboratory instruction and teaching/learning research needs at the most cost effective price.  Responsibility to manage Prep Room inventory may extended to include inventory and equipment in teaching/learning research laboratories. (30%)

  • Prepare equipment and supplies for lecture and laboratory classes and experiments, including mixing and maintaining adequate supplies of chemicals and solutions in predetermined quantities specific to the academic instruction. Laboratory classes may include general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology. (30%)

  • Ensure adequate functionality of laboratory equipment and provide maintenance care and/or arrange for preventative maintenance, repair, calibration, and/or replacement of all equipment associated with laboratory instruction and teaching/learning research needs. (10%)

  • Clean laboratory spaces pre and post instruction, teaching/learning research, or other use; including maintaining all aspects of laboratory facilities and associated laboratory and safety equipment. (10%)

  • Manage waste collection and generation from receiving to disposal.  This may include online database and use of autoclave. (10%)

  • Perform regular safety inspections of equipment and chemical inventory.  Address issues as they arise. (5%)

  • Provide operational support and services as required and assigned to address the needs of the University of Minnesota Rochester. (5%)
