The Department of Journalism and Creative Media at the University of Alabama seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in the area of political journalism. The position begins August 16, 2020.

The successful applicant will teach advanced journalism courses, engaging undergraduates in public affairs reporting, public records, and investigative journalism techniques. Applicants with professional experience and the ability to teach multimedia reporting skills are preferred. Research should focus on the study of journalism or journalism audiences in political systems, processes, or effects. This includes but is not limited to: public opinion, political media effects, media trust and/or disinformation, data journalism and politics, elections/campaign reporting, social movement journalism, press/party relations, journalism and democracy, politics and underrepresented communities, hybrid media systems, and populist communication. Quantitative and/or qualitative methodological approaches are appreciated. Successful candidates will also direct and mentor both master’s and doctoral students. Candidates should have earned a terminal degree in mass communication or a closely related area before the start date. Successful candidates will have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, which are core values of both the College of Communication and Information Sciences and the University as a whole. Candidates should demonstrate strong potential for successful undergraduate and graduate teaching and for developing a program of scholarship that is suitable for tenure consideration. Salary is competitive.

The university is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a growing city of 78,000 with an affordable cost of living. Tuscaloosa is home to award-winning restaurants, outdoor recreation, shopping, a riverside amphitheater, and other attractions. In 2018, the Carnegie Classification listed the university among the top doctoral research universities in the United States. C&IS includes a nationally ranked interdepartmental doctoral program and the Institute for Communication and Information Research, which offers survey, content analysis and focus group facilities, as well as a child media lab, a psychophysiology lab, and a theater. The College’s Digital Media Center houses the professional production facilities of the state’s Center for Public Television and Radio, Alabama Public Radio, and WVUA 23, a full-power commercial television station serving the Birmingham market.
