The Director of Academic Policy drives a number of key academic initiatives on behalf of the Provost and Vice Provosts to support the University’s aspirations for academic and research excellence. The Director is actively engaged in a number of committees, projects, and working groups to support student and faculty success, improve business processes as they relate to policy compliance, and drive the academic initiatives of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. As a policy expert, the Director plays a key role in interpreting University policy and by-laws, advising the Provost, Vice Provosts, Deans, and faculty in both day-to-day activities and strategic decision making.

The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and works within a dynamic team in the Office of the Provost to support academic initiatives, compliance, and operations across the University. A successful applicant will have a strong working knowledge of academic affairs in the context of higher education, experience interpreting and managing institutional or academic policy, a strong ethical perspective, and a commitment to cultural diversity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supports departments reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to enhance success of current programs and organization models, as well as implement new initiatives to improve undergraduate and graduate student success and career outcomes.
  2. Manages special and ongoing projects and initiatives that support academic priorities and new academic initiatives dedicated to achieving academic and research excellence, including research and benchmarking, accreditation review, drafting and presenting proposals, and implementing program or policy changes.
  3. Supports the Provost and Vice Provosts in implementing the current Academic Plan and preparing/implementing the new Academic Plan.
  4. Manages the Faculty Consulting Office and consults regularly with the Office of University Compliance, Office of Faculty and Staff Labor Relations, Human Resources, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and other units to review and make decisions relating to research compliance, faculty consulting, faculty leaves, conflicts of interest, and other faculty activities that conflict with University policy.
  5. Reviews and interprets University policies and by-laws on behalf of the Provost and Vice Provosts to advise staff, faculty, and academic leaders in day-to-day activities.
  6. Coordinates all academic policies including interpreting existing policy and coordinating any efforts to modify or create new policies.
  7. Supports the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, including preparing and managing materials for Board meetings and advising senior leadership on issues or items on Board agenda.
  8. Provides staff support for ongoing faculty awards and serves as representative on several university-wide committees.
  9. Supports the Academic Program Approval Process including review of academic programming for student success, liaising with the Office of Higher Education on program inventory, and seeking approval of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  10. Assists office staff in planning for and implementing academic affairs events such as New Faculty Orientation, Department Head and Associate Dean Meetings, etc.
  11. Assists office staff in cooperative effort to provide administrative support to Provost’s Office events and administrators, and supports Provost website administration as needed.
  12. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Master’s degree and knowledge of higher education3 years of experience working or teaching in higher educationExcellent oral and written communication skillsExcellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a complex, fast-paced environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Terminal degree and knowledge of higher educationMore than 3 years of experience in higher education, including direct experience in academic affairsExperience working directly with faculty or faculty administratorsExperience interpreting by-laws or policies

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, twelve-month, management staff position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
