QualificationsJob Summary:The Department of Pediatrics, Critical CareSection has an opening for a full time Instructor/PhysicianAssistant/Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner to work in the Pediatric ICU at theAnschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. Members of the Pediatrics Critical CareSection provide care to critically ill patients at Children’s HospitalColorado, participate in the education of fellows, house staff, advanced practitionersand students and are active in a variety of research fields. TheInstructor/Physician Assistant/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will primarily contributethrough provision of patient care to critically ill patients at Children’sHospital Colorado, but will also participate in the educational and researchmissions of the section.
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Provides/coordinates clinical practice forpatients admitted to the Pediatric Critical Care service or for whom thePediatric Critical Care service is consulting, 24 hours a day, through thecollaborative practice agreement and under the supervision of the on-callattending physician who is either on site or available by pager or phone.
  • Provides evidence-based clinical care to pediatricpatients in the PICU.
  • Gathers pertinent information systematically andskillfully from all sources: history, diagnostic tests, and comprehensivephysical examinations, behavioral and developmental assessments.
  • Incorporates all assessment findings into a planto direct patient management.
  • Round daily on all patients in the PICU basedupon a rotating schedule and collaborate with the attending physician, otherattending physicians from referral services, and with the healthcare team toassess, diagnose, plan, set priorities and realistic outcomes, and evaluate theeffectiveness and cost efficiency of patient care.
  • Evaluates patient physiological and behavioralresponses to interventions for revision of management plans.
  • Documents daily all relevant data including butnot limited to results of diagnostic tests, laboratory results, patients'condition, response to therapies/interventions, and follow-up interventions.
  • Differentiates normal and abnormal variationsfor all body systems.
  • Accurately interprets diagnostic tests.
  • Develops problem lists with associateddifferential diagnosis.
  • Communicates with the family regarding thechanging health care needs of their child.
  • Assesses family adaptation, coping skills andthe need for crisis or other interventions.
  • Establishes appropriate priorities of care.
  • Utilizing available resources (PharmD,formulary, consulting services) plans and implements appropriate pharmacologictherapies.
  • Accurately and appropriately performs routinediagnostic and therapeutic techniques according to established protocol andcurrent pediatric critical care standards. 
  • Initiates and performs measures necessary toresuscitate and stabilize a compromised pediatric patient according to currentcritical care and AHA standards.
  • Initiates referrals based on patient/familyneeds.
  • Communicates verbally all pertinent patientinformation to the on call attending physician, nursing staff, and otherrelevant healthcare providers.
  • Role models competence in advanced critical careskills.
  • Utilizes prescriptive privileges for identifiedpatient population.
  • Keeps knowledge base current by readingprofessional literature, attending educational programs, and reviewing changesin health legislation and relevant professional research.
  • Develops, implements, and promotes educationaland support resources, following institutional processes.
  • Utilizes evidence-based data and provideleadership to improve outcomes.
  • Utilizes evidence-based decision-making in allclinical practice.
  • Incorporates clinical research finding in thedevelopment and implementation of standards of care.
  • Supports IRB approved clinical research/trialsthrough a variety of activities including but not limited to: obtainingconsent, ordering diagnostic tests, recording laboratory and diagnosticresults, administering therapeutic interventions, and reporting patientoutcomes including toxicities or adverse events.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary qualityimprovement and/or research activities.
  • Participates in documenting outcome measures.
  • Identifies potential areas for research.
Minimum Qualifications:All candidates - Minimum three years ICUexperience as an advanced practice provider.
Physician Assistant: 
  • Graduation from an APAP approved PhysicianAssistant Training Program.
  • Certification from the National Commission onCertification of Physician Assistants. 
  • Colorado license will be required prior to startdate. 
  • BLS and PALS certification will be requiredprior to start date.
OR Pediatric Nurse Practitioner:
  • Graduate of an accredited BSN program. 
  • APN licensure and a Masters from an accreditedNurse Practitioner program. 
  • BLS and PALS certification will be requiredprior to start date.
  • Pediatric Nursing Certification Boardcertificate or other comparable certification required. 
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certificationrequired. 
  • Ability to obtain Prescriptive Authority in theState of Colorado. Will need to qualify for and obtain prescriptive authoritywithin one year of beginning position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of experience managing orcaring for critical care and intermediate patients in a tertiary care center.
  • Desire to work with the pediatric population.
  • Leadership experience.

  • Skill in prioritizing patient and system needsappropriately.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug testthrough Children's Hospital Colorado.
