Job Details

The Department of Languages & Literatures is an undergraduate department offering nine modern foreign languages, including majors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, minors in those languages plus Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, with electives in Arabic and classical Greek.

Position Summary

The Department of Languages and Literatures seeks qualified individuals for non-benefited, part-time teaching assignments in Italian in the 2019-20 academic year.

Adjunct Italian faculty members teach 4-credit undergraduate courses at the introductory level. The specific courses involved may vary from quarter to quarter and openings to teach these courses develop on a periodic basis, depending on departmental needs.

Adjunct faculty may teach up to a maximum of six courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring). This posting will serve for multiple openings.

Essential Functions

Adjuncts are expected to fulfill all responsibilities associated with teaching assigned courses, including:

  • Conducting all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared way
  • Thorough and accurate correction of assignments, providing appropriate constructive feedback
  • Prompt return of corrected work
  • Providing guidance and support to students
  • Reporting student grades and attendance
  • Holding regular weekly office hours on campus for students
  • Replying to email communication from students and colleagues promptly
  • Collaboration in creation of course level assessment materials
  • Enforcing all administration policies and rules governing students
  • Maintaining accurate and complete student records
  • Other instructional or academic duties as assigned by the Language Program Coordinator

Required Qualifications

  • MA in Italian education, linguistics, or a closely related field
  • Experience teaching Italian at the college or university level (substantiated by letters of recommendation)
  • Superior proficiency in Italian and English.
  • Experience or commitment to Inclusive Excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to engage diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more academic years of teaching Italian at the college or university level with proven excellence and effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with instructional technology
  • Experience working in multi-section coordinated courses
  • Experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL standards-based teaching and assessment
