Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Advocacy and Social Justice Education designs, develops, manages, and assesses social justice education and advocacy programs at Wake Forest University. Key responsibilities include directing the Social Justice Incubator, supporting BRANCHES Social Justice Retreat, coordinating the Collage Advocacy Summit, advising students, developing and delivering social justice training, and creating curricular and co-curricular opportunities for social justice education.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Directs the Social Justice Incubator, a space for students to educate, advocate, and organize around issues of social justice. Selects, trains, and advises the student executive board, and advises new student groups interested in SJI.
  • Designs and delivers workshops for students and community members on social justice topics (e.g. power and privilege, identity, etc.)
  • Assists with the BRANCHES Social Justice Retreat, a signature social justice education experience for students. Assists in selecting and training student executive board, moderators, and participants. Coordinates logistics for the retreat.
  • Advises student groups focused on social justice, such as the Student Movement for Immigration Justice, etc.
  • Identifies, develops, and manages partnerships with grassroots community organizations, advocacy groups, and nonprofits. Develops opportunities for advocacy and social action.
  • Directs the College Advocacy Summit; works with student leaders to initiate Request for Proposals (RFP), select programs, develop marketing, and recruit participants from area schools.
  • Directs Wake Alternative Break (WAB) program. Manages logistics for 10 WAB trips; selects and trains student leaders; manages all finances for trips; develops curricular resources.
  • Directs the BUILD pre-orientation program for incoming first year students. Works with student leaders to introduce new students to Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community.
  • Directs the Civic Scholars Program, a leadership and recognition program for students who make a significant commitment to service, training, academic work, leadership, and civic engagement. Manages all logistics for the program, tracks student progress, and coordinates advising and mentoring sessions.
  • Works collaboratively with Executive Director to develop and implement Deacs Decide election engagement program. Plans campus programming, including voter registration, campus-debate watch events, speakers and panel discussions. Coordinates community voter registration drives and assists with transportation to polling stations.  
  • Coordinates Intergroup Dialogue Program. Works collaboratively with campus stakeholders to identify instructors and recruit student participants.
  • Manages PHI social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and website.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Functions:

Serves on Pro Humanitate Institute team; assists with communication, outreach, assessment, and other institute efforts.

Additional Job Description

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree and 1-2 years of related experience; or Bachelor’s degree and significant related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with training, teaching, or presenting in front of groups.
  • Demonstrated experience with advising student leaders in higher education.
  • Capacity to work independently and to manage others.
  • Knowledge of social justice concepts and application in higher education.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Ability to speak more than one language.

Accountabilities:

Supervision of graduate assistants and student leaders.
