The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) seeks a dynamic individual for the entry level position of Safety and Compliance Associate I. The ideal candidate will learn and later perform chemical laboratory safety and compliance audits and lab closing and lab opening consultations in order to discover and remedy lapses in safety and compliance issues. This position reports directly to the Senior Safety and Compliance Officer who is the mentor and resource for laboratory risk assessments. General Job duties include: offering personal protective equipment, engineering controls and administrative controls to mediate laboratory hazards and form positive rapport with lab personnel, principal investigators and department heads; presenting safety and compliance training for lab personnel. Assure compliance with University guidelines, best management practices and occupational and environmental regulations. Evaluates the impact of safety standards and regulations on clients; and communicates effectively these requirements to lab stakeholders. The specialist will serve as a member of the hazardous materials response team. This position is responsible for maintaining continuous excellence in customer service for all Chemical Laboratory Safety services and interactions. Duties expand beyond the expertise of chemical safety and involve a multidisciplinary approach to support overall laboratory and research safety.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
-Excellent computer and organizational skills and be able to communicate honestly, positively, and effectively with all levels of employees and faculty in higher education research settings.
-Good working knowledge of chemistry, chemical reactions, chemical nomenclature and safe chemical storage methods.
-Working one on one or within large groups to accomplish tasks is part of the job responsibility.
-Ability to interpret and maintain proficiency in regulations,
standards, guidelines and trends in environmental health and safety.
-Job description involves the ability and willingness to directly assist and offer expertise during workday, after hours, weekend and holiday incidents involving hazardous materials spills at UGA.
-There is an expectation for participation in an after-hours, on-call hazardous material response team rotation.
- Participate in an occupational health and safety program and be able to wear a
respirator, pass physical fitness medical evaluation and lift at least 50 lbs. above the
-Stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel.
-Periodically perform short duration physical exertions, including light-medium weight lifting, pushing, pulling, stair or ladder climbing, etc. in support of a safety investigation, area or operations survey, or incident response
-Work in a variety of physical environments, including weather extremes, chemical/biological/radiological laboratories, animal care and use facilities, etc.
-Use standard business office computer equipment and software.

Demonstrate competency to perform laboratory inspections, audits, consultations, lab openings and closings and compliance reviews of research laboratories, general science labs, teaching laboratories, support facilities, general work areas and other facilities that utilize hazardous chemicals for large geographic areas of campus.Percentage of time60 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities
Consult with ORS supervisor, Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on inspection findings and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance, appropriate selection of personal protective equipment, engineering practices and administrative controls.
Collect, file and submit lab findings into the Chematix system as part of the integrated environmental management system. Generate report findings for trend analysis and stakeholder discussion.
