Assist in the planning and development of specialized training for entry level Law Enforcement Recruit Academy students and for current law enforcement officers, providing transformative educational offerings to meet stakeholder needs. Schedule/reschedule/cancel training utilizing adjunct instructors and vendors for various training activities.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

1. Research and assist in the planning and development of specialized training for law enforcement agencies; evaluate and implement training plan.
2. Assist in the planning of emergency vehicle operations training and community safety classes for the general public and the private sector; evaluate and implement training.
3. Assist instructional staff to develop training lesson plans to ensure safety and consistency.
4. Meet one-on-one and/or in groups with law enforcement recruits for mentoring/tutoring /study session. Reinforce technical skills the students learned during training.
5. Research and implement training, utilizing and scheduling adjunct instructors and vendors for various training activities.
6. Procure, monitor, maintain and repair required equipment, including squad cars used for law enforcement training, as necessary.
7. Prepare and setup multimedia, training and safety equipment.
8. Maintain current professional and technical knowledge in the field through professional education and activities. Serve as liaison to Wisconsin Department of Justice on law enforcement training and advisory committees.
9. Support College managers in quality and process improvement activities.
10. Participate in and contribute to assignments and special projects of a similar nature and level.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in th work environment is usually quiet. The firing range can cause extreme noise where ear protection is required, along with safety vest and eye protection.
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to both hot and cold temperatures working outdoors.
  • The employee is exposed to weapons and weapon/equipment materials.
Minimum Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of and ability to recognize safe and unsafe law enforcement training practices
2. Knowledge of adult learning theories
3. Interpersonal communication skills - oral, written and listening
4. Organizational and time management skills
5. Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to work processes
6. Ability to analyze law enforcement training requirements and supplemental training
7. Familiarity with computer software applications such as word processing and spreadsheets

Educational and Experience Requirements:
1. Current or previous WI Law Enforcement Officer Certification
2. Certification in at least one WI Department of Justice instructional area
3. Five years of work experience in the Criminal Justice field involving training, evaluation, coordinating or supervision
4. Work experience teaching adult learners 2 years (part or full time)

Supplemental Information

The Instructional Assistant - Recruit Academy supports the School of Protective and Human Services and is available on or before August 1, 2019.

Position Information
This position is a part-time, 22 hours/per week position with hours typically Monday through Friday.

Salary/Wage
Salary/Wage is listed from the minimum of the range (Grade 7) to the midpoint of the range (Grade 7) at the 2019 rates and is based on experience and internal equity.
