Communications Specialist - Georgetown College

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Specialist plays a critical role on the team, which is responsible for the collecting, developing and packaging of dynamic content. An exceptional writer, with the ability to make complex content digestible and relatable, the communications specialist creates content for digital channels and traditional print materials. This person is adept at AP style, comfortable creating all forms of content, including news stories, web content, brochure content, etc. and skillful in writing content that achieves desired outcomes. This person is a team player, a strong relationship builder and possesses the ability to mine and identify stories from key partners. The communications specialist supports the Office of Communications overarching content strategy by supporting the development and execution of a strategic content calendar that seeks to support and advance the College's vision and mission.
Other main responsibilities for the Communications Specialist include but are not limited to:

Content Creation and Project Management:
  • Create dynamic engaging content for digital channels and print materials in alignment with Georgetown College's brand identity standards and communication messaging guidelines
  • Manage the College's editorial calendar.
  • Schedule client interviews, photo shoots, and act as a liaison between the College and the University's Office of Strategic Communication for connecting clients to media.

Web Content Generation and Publishing
  • Serve as College's website editor and makes regular updates through a WordPress content management system.
  • Manage the College Communications email inbox and triages requests.

Dean's Alumni Stewardship Communications
  • Assist the Dean's Executive Assistant with writing and tracking communications from the Dean to alumni and friends of the College.

Other Duties as Assigned
  • Track and compile communications metrics.
  • Work on special projects as needed, including but not limited to, help to prepare key presentations, and support major events, such as the May commencement ceremonies.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 2-4 years' work experience in a communications field.
  • Excellent written communication skills, outstanding storytelling skills and the ability to translate complex research into well-crafted, digestible content for a wide array of audiences
  • Experience with AP Style.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, must be an excellent editor and proofreader with strong copy editing skills, and able to work under tight deadlines with multiple deliverables.
  • Experience with email communications systems, content management systems, including WordPress, and other social media and digital technologies designed to support communications strategies.
  • Must be able to collaborate with multiple levels of the community, celebrate their diversity, and shine a light on their academic and professional excellence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google apps, WordPress, and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop and InDesign, working knowledge of project management apps like Trello, Slate, or others.
  • Higher education experience strongly preferred.
