Salary:
Salary Range: $4,372 - $6,478 per month

Note: This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.

Overview:
Under the direction of the Director for the Center for Faculty Excellence or designee, an Instructional Designer provides instructional design support to faculty, staff, and students. Specifically, Instructional Designers are expected to serve as the primary resource for academic applications of technology and development of course content, assessment plans, and presentations; as well as to provide training and development support to faculty and staff.

An Instructional Designer is expected to work independently and in teams, and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments.

The employee shall allocate priority and time to the duties mentioned below based upon direction from the manager to whom this employee reports. The manager will communicate these priorities and time allocation at least annually and when necessary.

Position Summary:
  • The major duties of the job include:
  • Provide support and direction for faculty and staff for university accessibility and universal design for learning
  • Collaborate with the Lead Sign Language Interpreter to ensure communication access on campus
  • Coordinate campus training for faculty to ensure course materials are accessible
  • Provide general support for faculty using the campus LMS (currently Canvas) for instruction
  • Consult with faculty regarding the application of academic technologies to instruction
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to convert traditional courses to Web-based/Web-enhanced/hybrid courses to be offered either synchronously or asynchronously
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to research, use, or develop new, online learning modules and courses that are mobile ready
  • Provide individual consultation to faculty members about their specific course design and content issues
  • Schedule, develop, and facilitate workshops providing hands-on instruction on academic and/or web based technologies
  • Coordinate online course evaluations for the campus (IDEA)
  • Write, develop, and publish training guides
  • Write, develop, and publish video-based training material
  • Write, develop, and publish web-based training material
  • Implement one or more evidenced-based instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction).

    The secondary duties of the job include:
  • Advise and assist faculty, staff, and students in the selection of available software, hardware and/or database systems, and sources to meet their needs
  • Develop and conduct workshops about technology used by faculty and staff
  • Research available products and systems and recommend alternatives to meet identified needs
  • Prepare requests for proposals, cost estimates, and justifications
  • Provide asset and cost information when requested
  • Other duties as assigned

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Background and knowledge of Bb Ally or equivalent accessibility tool for course material
  • Knowledge of Universal Design principles and the techniques for creation of accessible digital instructional materials
  • Experience with course building and delivery using a learning management system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Web-based instructional and editing software, presentation packages
  • Demonstrated knowledge of copyright, fair use, and TEACH Act laws applicable to instructional delivery and
  • intellectual property
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; conduct presentations and workshops.
  • Organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects under competing deadlines and maintain flexibility in response to constantly shifting priorities.
  • Collaborate with others to help advance the goals of the department and university. Show courtesy and respect towards others and promote a positive and service oriented collegial work environment.
  • Ability to serve as a resource to faculty, students and staff in responding to inquiries and providing detailed information
  • Ability to provide functional input and analysis into discussions regarding short and long term technology implementations, upgrades and maintenance to enhance processes to meet programmatic goals.
  • Experience with academic technologies such as those for screen capture, plagiarism detection, and quiz creation
  • Experience with digital media technologies for creation and deployment of audio and video, including podcasts
  • Background in effective instructional technology and technology-mediated course design
  • Demonstrated ability to teach adults, particularly faculty from a wide array of departments
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual or team member

    Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related field
  • Two years of closely related experience

    Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with the Canvas learning management system
  • At least three years of experience with instructional design responsibilities in higher education
  • Experience with e-portfolio systems
  • Community college or university teaching experience
  • Extensive experience with course building and delivery using a learning management system
  • Experience with academic technologies such as those for screen capture, plagiarism detection, and quiz creation
  • Experience with digital media technologies for creation and deployment of audio and video
  • Instructional design experience with Canvas used by the university
  • Experience with multiple learning management systems including Canvas, Moodle, Desire to Learn,
  • Master's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields
