Job Summary:

The Student Services Counselor, reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Evening Studies, provides student services advice and operational support for the Undergraduate Evening Studies programs. Responsibilities include: advises students, coordinates degree completion plans, recommends and implements student retention strategies, performs degree audits, coordinates probationary processes, oversees orientation for new students, coordinates activities with other campus offices (registrar, admissions, financial aid, bursar, academic support, disability services, etc.) as needed.

Student services counseling and coordination:

Advises students on UES degree programs and all related registration and enrollment procedures, providing an exceptional, tailored student experience.

Maps course pathways and creates degree completion plans for students.

Facilitates student retention strategies.

Completes degree audits.

Completes preliminary transcript evaluations.

Completes probationary review procedures and notifications.

Conducts review and processes applications for new students.

Develops new student orientation program, orients new students, and conducts new student orientation sessions, in person or online.

Develops and distributes communication to student body regarding registration, campus activities, career opportunities, etc.

Coordinates and collaborates with Campus Offices (registrar, admissions, financial aid, bursar, academic support, disability services, career services, academic deans, IT, etc.) to provide exceptional service to UES students.

Recognizes student achievements: responsible for student recognition activities, including Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, UES Graduation Celebration, exhibitions of student work, etc.

Performs triage and crisis response management.

Conducts interviews of prospective students, as needed.

Operational coordination:

Manages UES student data and records maintenance (Moodle, Colleague, Workday [under implementation], Starfish, and other relevant systems).

Develops and produces reports on student retention, probation, and success.

Professional Development:

Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.

Participates in professional organizations and represents the University at NACADA and other relevant professional organizations as requested by Director of UES.

Relationships:

Works with students, professors, co-workers, Dean’s office, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, and the public to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Responsible for own work.  May assist, or provide guidance to others doing similar work, including student workers, co-workers, and interns.

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps.  Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit; it is employee’s responsibility to trace errors and make corrections.

Work is performed independently on routine work; judgment will be required to ascertain non-routine issues or questions, which should be referred to the supervisor.
