Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform laboratory activities within the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Our research aims to investigate the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders. This position will be primarily responsible for conducting series of experiments, supporting laboratory staff and assisting with laboratory maintenance. Part-time 20 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.Maintain test equipment and overall organization of the lab. (22%)

2.Perform projects and laboratory activities in accordance with general plans. (20%)

3.Generate and differentiate human induced pluripotent stem cells to cell types of interest. Perform cell-based assays of a routine nature. (25%)

4.Perform immunocytochemistry assays of disease phenotypes in induced pluripotent stem cells and differentiated cell types. Conduct analysis of these assays involves the use of imaging software in low throughput and high throughput manner.(10%).

5.Perform various molecular biology techniques, biochemical assays. (10%)

6.Keep accurate, up-to-date and detailed experimental records. (12%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with the principle investigator, research associates, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students in the course of conducting research activities.

University: Weekly contact with support personnel, department assistants, and principal investigators and researchers from other departments and centers across the CWRU campus to maintain workflow.

External: Contact with outside vendors as needed to exchange information.

Students: Daily contact with graduate and post-doctoral students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor of Science degree and 0 to 1 year of experience, or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1.Knowledge and understanding of common concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of cell and molecular biology.

2.Knowledge of good laboratory skills and practices is required, specifically; knowledge of laboratory practices for cell culture.

3.Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, School and University, and with individuals outside the University.

4.Strong organization skills; must be detail oriented, possess the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines, and demonstrate attention to accuracy and have the ability to keep accurate and complete records.

5.Ability to problem-solve effectively, and demonstrate good analytical skills, good judgment and logical decision-making.

6.Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively within a team. Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, self -motivation, and a commitment to high quality.

7.Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Mac and/or Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat).

8.Experience with imaging software such as image and bioinformatics toolkits to analyze next generation sequencing data highly desired.

9.Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced, changing environment to meet changing demands and pre-determined deadlines.

10.Willingness and ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

11.Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

12.Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment, including biosafety level 2 tissue culture work. This position will have contact with/or exposure to the following hazards: blood-borne pathogens, chemicals and infectious agents.Laboratory safety and blood-borne pathogen training is required and will be provided.Appropriate personal protective equipment will be required, including gloves, lab coat and protective eyewear.
