Department Description

The Department of surgery serves a tripartite mission of delivering outstanding clinical care, educating future surgeons and surgeon scientist, and conducting high level innovative research. To accomplish its mission, the Department of Surgery has developed a centralized approach with an administrative team supporting its needs. This position will be situated in the Administrative Office of the Department of Surgery and, as such, will work closely with the Chair’s Executive Office as well as each of the nine specialized clinical divisions.

Position Description

This position serves as the professional-level Program Coordinator working with research administration and education for the Department of Surgery. A majority of this position’s activities will include the coordination, proofing, editing and writing of grant proposals, manuscripts, announcements and letters for the administrative suite, as well as for other faculty as needed. The position requires strong analytical skills, strong writing skills, and graphic and editing skills to produce written and/or visual products, this includes, technical writing and proofing of letters, grants, journals, articles, presentations, speeches and other large scale communication/reporting streams. The position requires independent thought and the ability to trouble shoot and be proactive to accomplish the goals. The position will also be responsible for various projects as assigned by the Chair.

This position will organize and assist in facilitating weekly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) meetings and Grand Rounds. This position will be the primary coordinator for projects, regular meetings/conferences and symposiums hosted by the Chair. Some administrative duties are inherent to the role which include making travel arrangements, submitting for reimbursements, scheduling and acting as the back-up for the Executive Assistant role.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The position requires strong analytical skills, strong writing skills, and editing skills to produce written and/or visual products. The position requires independent thought and the ability to trouble shoot and be proactive to accomplish the goals. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products. This is a position of trust and must maintain the highest confidentiality for sensitive documents and sensitive meetings managed in the Chair’s office.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and experience with the UNC system and regulations also preferred. Experience with University’s Research Administration programs is a plus.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
