DESCRIPTION

The Division of Dysmorphology and Teratology is involved in four major areas: 1) providing clinical services to patients with birth defects and developmental disabilities, 2) providing public health services in counseling patients, providers and education to the public about prenatal exposures and exposures during breastfeeding and their impact on child development and health, 3) a teaching program that includes undergraduate students, graduate students in epidemiology, medical students, and post -doctoral students, pediatrics, epidemiology, health behavior, global health, pharmacy, and other specialties; and, 4) conducting clinical research.

The Center for Better Beginnings within the Division of Dysmorphology and Teratology in the Department of Pediatrics at UCSD conducts research studies to better understand the causes, prevention and treatment of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Research programs and projects within the Division involve federal, state and industry sponsored grants and contracts totaling over $40 million. These encompass national and international studies that require complex interrelated infrastructure and shared resources both within the Division and with collaborators and subcontractors outside the Division.

Under supervision, incumbent works as a Research Data Coordinator to provide data management for MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies, at the Center for Better Beginnings, in support of reports, scientific presentations, publications, and grants. Primary duties include conducting, coordinating and auditing medical record review, as well as identifying data entry, data quality and integrity problems that are relevant to the research hypotheses and interpretation, and working with staff to resolve these issues.

Incumbent is responsible for independently interpreting research protocols, coordinating abstraction and validation of medical record review, timely review, and following up on error correction and discrepancies for clean and accurate data. Other duties include coordinating and performing data audit procedures as necessary, implementing the data monitoring plan and updating the data-entry manual as necessary, as well as reporting and analyzing data-entry errors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in science, such as biology, epidemiology, and/or clinical research as typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree; or equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and implement a plan, and evaluate achievement of milestones as required.

  • Strong skill and ability in evaluating the quality of data submitted and preparation of summary reports.

  • Experience and ability in working with database auditing in a setting in which multiple users are accessing the database. Experience and proficiency medical record abstraction and auditing of abstraction.

  • Proven experience and knowledge in working with medical records, medical terminology, medications and pharmaceutical terminology, and birth defects terminology.

  • High level of skill in the use of standard office, and databases on Windows platforms including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint), Adobe Acrobat, and Filemaker Pro.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Master's Degree.
  • Data cleaning and data management experience.
  • Ability to analyze results of research productivity and to recommend and design methods for improving research productivity and quality.
