Description of Responsibilities:
The Athletic Director has overall responsibility for the Intercollegiate Athletic program at SUNY Oswego. This entails either direct responsibility or supervisory responsibility through assistant athletic directors, coaches and staff who conduct various aspects of the program. These areas include:
- Program Policies and Procedures –Developing and implementing policies that will direct the conduct of intercollegiate sports in all its facets with attention to detail, professionalism and equity including areas of scheduling, facility use, budget allocations, and program planning. The Director shall guide program philosophy, focusing on the connection between intellectual, personal, and athletic development of student athletes.
- Departmental: The Director is responsible for planning, convening, and conducting regular departmental meetings. Including addressing policy development, program needs, program assessment, communication among staff, performance expectations, services to athletes, collaborative problem-solving, strategic planning and budget.
- Personnel – The Director is responsible for coordinating the selection, supervision, development, and evaluation of all Athletic Department professional, classified and student staff.
- Compliance/Rules –The Director will ensure that all NCAA, SUNYAC, and ECAC rules and regulations will be properly administered and adhered to by all parties.
- Scheduling – The Director will supervise all team scheduling and resulting travel, game management, and officiating needs.
- Budget – The Director, with input from department staff, will develop a yearly budget plan to be presented to the Intercollegiate Athletic Board (IAB) and recommended by that group to the college president. The Director will monitor all athletic accounts.
- Athlete Welfare – The Director will provide a program and atmosphere that expects and promotes both student and athlete success in the classroom, on the playing field, on the campus and in the community, including appropriate academic support, physical evaluations, insurance coverage, eligibility check, student and staff conduct, and connections to the College and community that further learning and team spirit. Establish and monitor with coaches a team captain’s program that includes risk management, interpersonal relationships, alcohol and drug use, hazing, and community service. Establish and evaluate student athlete governance and advisory groups as required.
- Long Range Planning – With input from departmental staff, the IAB, and student athlete advisory groups, the Director will develop a long range plan for the department that will address division strategic plans, facility updates, equipment needs, and personnel needs on a continual basis.
- Sports Publicity – The Director will supervise the Sports Information Director in the formulation of a plan to provide appropriate publicity for teams and for the department as well as work with media and with alumni. Supervise the maintenance of appropriate departmental website, including statistics, schedules, and athlete promotions.
- University Responsibility – The Director will serve on university committees as appropriate in consultation with supervisor, will assign staff to Divisional committees and work groups, and provide leadership to integrating athletics into the life and management of the College. The Director will encourage departmental participation in community service and will engage in community relations through appropriate means to improve college athletics community participation.
- Facilities: The Director is the building coordinator for athletic facilities and is responsible for monitoring conditions, seeking upgrades and repairs, and scheduling events and activities consistent with the requirements of the College’s Facilities Use Policy.
The Director of Athletics reports to and is responsible to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management
In addition, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
- Master’s degree at time of application
- Two - five years of intercollegiate or professional head coaching experience
- Administrative experience in athletics, including budget management, staff supervision, and facilities management
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of NCAA rules and familiarity with NCAA compliance procedures
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply rules and policies, including a student conduct code, with integrity
- Experience with external fundraising, marketing and promotion
- Demonstrated a record of establishing and maintaining an excellent relationship with the local community and alumni
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills and an ability to select and mentor coaches
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with other institutional departments, particularly Intramurals and Recreation, Residence Life, Facilities Maintenance, the Intercollegiate Athletic Board, and faculty and staff
