Under general supervision, operates and maintains a number of motorized vehicles and specialized equipment; performs maintenance functions.

Typical Duties

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required, and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

a)drives and operates a pick-up truck, ice flooding machine, field grooming machine, ice edging machine, snow blower and outdoor vacuum, golf cart and other motorized vehicles as required;

b)maintain sport playing surfaces including, natural grass, AstroTurf, ice surfaces, courts (basketball and volleyball);

c)facility upkeep including identifying and troubleshooting deficiencies in the facility including identifying defective vehicles and equipment and may perform minor facility maintenance on vehicles and equipment;

d)set-up and maintain vehicles and sporting equipment for faculty, university and external customer events; while continuously projecting a positive professional image of the faculty in dress and behaviour at all times while on duty;

e)shovels snow, sweeps garbage, mops floors, marks fields and erects temporary fixtures, cleans locker rooms, paints and performs minor maintenance duties; opens and locks doors of designated areas used by authorized personnel; requests unauthorized personnel to leave premises; escalating as required;

f)prepares laundry for washing, maintains and operates equipment according to standard operating procedures;

g)maintains inventory of supplies. Notifies supervisor when supplies are low;

h)ensures equipment and materials are moved and stored in an orderly and appropriate manner, moves furniture and equipment as required;

i)performs seasonal locker clean outs, cutting locks as directed; removes belongings, records and stores items removed in the designated area for pick up;

j)provides guidance and assistance to casual staff and others as directed;

k)other related duties as required.



CampusMinimum Requirements:


Education: 

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 

A minimum of three years of related sport facility operator experience. A minimum of one year of experience with an ice resurfacer is required. Experience maintaining sport playing surfaces is considered an asset. Must have considerable front line customer service experience.

Other: 

Must have the ability to perform the essential physical functional requirements of the position, including lifting and moving heavy equipment up to 25kgs. Must possess excellent communication skills including the demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions. Must demonstrate diplomacy, tact and conflict management skills; must be able to deal calmly with angry or upset individuals, to exercise good judgment and to take initiative; must be able to resolve problems and to participate effectively within a team. Must have an understanding of diversity and equity issues.

Must possess a Provincial Class "G" driver's license to operate motorized vehicles. Must successfully complete a current First Aid, AED and CPR certificate within the probationary period. Certifications must be kept current and must be updated annually. Completion of the ORFA Ice Maintenance course is a strong asset.
