This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 06/30/2020, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The San Diego State University Library is seeking a service-oriented, skillful and able individual to assist in supporting our Makerspace lab. The ideal candidate for this position is a tech enthusiast who enjoys learning and teaching others to use various technologies to design and create a wide range of items. The SDSU Library’s Makerspace program provides SDSU students with materials, tools, and technologies for hands-on exploration, creation, and participatory learning. It democratizes access to new technologies by making them available to the whole SDSU community; supports hands-on, project-based, and interest-driven learning; serves as a competitive advantage for students seeking to innovate; and provides a place for critical and creative thinking.

Collaborating with departmental staff and other colleagues, the Library Lab Assistant manages the Makerspace; hires, trains, and supervises student assistants; assists and teaches patrons; oversees safety plan and inventory; fixes machines such as 3D printers; and teaches workshops.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,284 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,128 - $5,497 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to two years of experience performing a variety of support services for an instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment.

OR

Equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies, or equipment or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit may be substituted for six months of the experience.

OR

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline in the specialty area to which assigned.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • One year of professional work experience providing customer service and/or support.
  • One year of professional work experience using Windows OS, MS Office software and Google Gmail
  • Experience leading the work of others
  • Experience keeping an inventory of items
  • Experience using a combination of: Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling/creation tools, movie editing software, audio/music production software
  • Relevant experience with virtual reality hardware and software, familiarity with 3D scanners and 3D design software
  • Experience with woodworking tools and/or prototyping electronics
  • Familiarity with makerspaces, hackerspaces, or other design studios
  • Experience in a workshop, auto shop, design studio or similar settingExperience meeting high service standards in all interactions (in-person, by telephone, via e-mail or online) and to manage others to provide excellent serviceExperience interpreting and explaining a wide variety of policies and procedures, varying from basic to complex, to the public, and to exercise independent judgmentExperience in a position requiring a high degree of time-management, and organizational skillsExperience working independently as well as part of a teamExperience training and or teachingExperience working in an environment where procedures were not clearly defined, requiring the use of problem-solving skills
