Position SummaryResidential and Hospitality Services in collaboration with the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative at Michigan State University seeks an equity minded analyst with curiosity, creativity, focus, and attention to detail in particular as it relates to student success and predictive analytics. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey findings and broad trends to a variety of audiences and positively influence MSU senior leadership and faculty. Additionally, be able to clearly articulate findings to non-technical audiences where activities may include development of data representations and visualizations, advising on machine learning approaches, creating reports dashboards. Candidate should have a strong background in at least several of the following areas: machine learning, deep learning, database technologies, data modeling, and statistics. Additionally, strong applicants should possess the ability to develop, design and conduct qualitative and quantitative research projects; developing interview structures, questions, and conduct interviews; synthesize, analyze data, and produce reports for broad institutional use. The ideal candidate will also present the ability to function well in a team environment and engage in the work of interdisciplinary teams as appropriate to pursue opportunities.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Education, Social Sciences, Student Affairs, or a related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in statistical consulting, research, data mining, data science, machine learning, data management, qualitative coding and analysis; the successful candidate will have knowledge of qualitative research methodologies to design surveys and experience working on collaborative research projects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired QualificationsA Masters or Ph.D. in higher education, social sciences, or student affairs; three to five years of related and progressive responsibility or expansive post graduate experience in statistics, computational science, research methods, psychology, sociology, education or other related field of social science discipline; in depth knowledge of university administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research-oriented roles; ability to use data retrieval, manipulation, and expertise in statistical tools such as STATA, NVIVO, SAS, SQL, R, D3, Python, or similar; proven excellence in and advanced knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to design surveys, experiments or other instruments to manage, extrapolate and analyze research data; excellent communication skills including, presenting, training, editing, and writing as well as accuracy and attention to detail.
