Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

The Health and Development Laboratory (PI: Katherine Ehrlich) is seeking to hire a full-time research assistant to begin Summer 2019. Our work focuses on social determinants of health in children and adolescents. The RA will be expected to work collaboratively with the PI, graduate students, and other laboratory staff on a new longitudinal study of African American youth in the Athens, GA area. In this role, the RA will be responsible for: recruiting and scheduling participants, conducting home visits, managing undergraduate research assistants, communicating with the IRB, and collecting biological specimens. Experience with (or willingness to learn) phlebotomy is critical. Some evening and weekend work will be involved.

Opportunities to assist with other ongoing lab projects may be available if time permits.

Duties/Responsibilities

Recruiting, scheduling, and running research participants in home-visit setting. The RA will be helping the team identify eligible families to participate in the study, set up appointments for the home visits, and will be responsible for conducting the home visit (with support from other lab staff). This position involves a lot of direct interfacing with families (our participants), so excellent communication skills and a friendly demeanor will be an asset.

Handling biological specimens: during the home visit, we will be drawing blood from child participants. The RA will be responsible for handling the blood tubes and arranging for them to be transported back to the laboratory.

Organizing data: home visits will involve data collection via Qualtrics surveys on iPads, biometric assessments of child participants, and blood draws. The RA will work with the PI to ensure that all data are organized and stored securely.

Supervising undergraduate research assistants: We plan to have undergraduate RAs assist with recruiting, scheduling, and completing home visit data collection. The undergraduate RAs will report to the PI and graduate students in the lab, and the new research assistant (this position) will also help ensure that undergraduate RAs are on task.

Managing IRB correspondence: Although the PI and graduate students are responsible for most IRB tasks, the RA will assist the PI in compiling information requested by the IRB (e.g., yearly continuing review materials, etc).

Contributing to research reports and presentations: On occasion, the PI may request tables, graphs, or other materials to be used for research reports or presentations. The RA will work with the PI to compile this information.
