The division of Nephrology and Hypertension maintains a full spectrum of clinical services, including management of acute and chronic renal failure, renal transplantation, and hypertension. The division has extensive experience in hemodialysis, all forms of peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis (including immunoabsorption), renal biopsy, and immunosuppression management.
The division maintains two chronic dialysis units, one on the East Carolina University School of Medicine campus, and the other on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In addition, the University maintains an active renal transplant program performing approximately 100 transplants per year.

Job Duties

The Physician Extender will serve under the assigned attending for the care of patients with kidney disease and hypertension. Job responsibilities will include: rounding on dialysis patients and be available for the day to day and urgent care of these patients, provide care to patients with advanced kidney disease (not yet on dialysis) in the clinic setting-including education and care management, opportunities in the nephrology research lab, inpatient rounding for the nephrology service, and assisting with the operations of the outpatient clinic.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee and licensed by the NC Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

This position is subject to the Broad Banding Salary Administration Plan. Pay will be commensurate with applicant’s competencies as well as budget, equity, and market considerations.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
