About the UnitThe University of Chicago was awarded a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) to provide resources to basic, clinical, and translational scientists through new professional interactions, program and research projects, and through the elimination of barriers within research. The Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) is the administrative unit for UChicago’s CTSA program, and it works with more than 60 institutions across the country as part of the CTSA consortium to advance medicine in innovative ways and transform research results into improved clinical practice. The ITM operates across divisional, departmental, and professional school lines to generate new research methods, technologies, and molecular target discovery. It also works with its affiliates at Rush University Medical Center, the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and NorthShore University HealthSystem, along with strategic Chicagoland partner organizations and community members to convert biomedical research into health improvement and to raise public awareness both about the research being done and the importance of participation in clinical trials. This part-time position provides sole overnight care and research protocol execution for research participants in the Clinical Research Center. The position will work 24 hours per week. Shifts will either be 7:00pm-7:00am two days per week, or 11:00pm-7:00am three days per week. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Responsible for patient care for members of the University community. Provides services relating to health training, athletic health, behavioral health, and rehabilitation across the University. Assists individuals coping with personal issues, disabilities, and life-threatening diseases.

Supervises the general health and welfare of students and establishes plans for the safe distribution of medications. Provides direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team. Might participate in a variety of clinical research projects/studies involving various modalities of treatment for patients.

P2: Requires knowledge and experience in own discipline; still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. Builds knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Solves a range of straightforward problems. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction.

Role ImpactIndividual Contributor

ResponsibilitiesThe job provides professional support and solves straightforward problems in nursing assist in the design, development, and ongoing modification of health care to patients. May educate staff and assist in problem solving to promote the implementation of the health care system.

1) Has a solid understanding of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders., 2) Applies logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems., 3) Interprets information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities., 4) Has a solid understanding of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit-specific Responsibilities

1) Participates in established and future research programs

2) Trains, participates in trial related activity, and cares for participants enrolled into research protocols

3) Research participants may include pediatric, adult and geriatric populations

4) Follows GCP, professional nursing practice standards and patient-centered care principles in all interactions with research participants

5) Evaluates all lab results for signs of toxicity or complications related to either the treatment or disease

6) Reports adverse drug reactions to the PI

Unit-preferred Competencies

1) Must be able to work alone and independently

2) Fundamental working knowledge of clinical research

3) Knowledge of patient care fundamentals, including aseptic principles and techniques

4) Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner

5) Excellent verbal and written communication

6) Ability to read documents or instruments

7) Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions

8) Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations

9) Ability to solve problems by applying math or reasoning principles

10) Ability to adapt to changing working situations and work assignments

11) Strong phlebotomy and venous access (IV) skills strongly

Education, Experience, and CertificationsMinimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

1) Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois from the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX)

2) Certification as a Clinical Research Professional (SOCRA) or a Clinical Research Coordinator (ACRP) is preferred.  Applicants without this certification will be required to obtain it within six months of employment

3) BLS and PLS certification

Experience

1) At least two years of experience as a nurse in clinical research coordination/management
