SUMMARY:

Roofer Apprentice performs roofing duties necessary to maintain in good repair the roofing systems of all University buildings including installation, repair and maintenance of roof membranes and roof drainage systems (drains, gutters, downspouts). Must be familiar with tools of the trade and have the mechanical aptitude to learn and perform duties as outlined below.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and clean all gutters on all University buildings.
  • Perform routine roof maintenance to include inspections, cleaning and patching of all roof systems in addition to gutter/downspout repair/replacement and repairs to slate roofs as necessary.
  • Record maintenance tasks in automated system as required.
  • Communicates information to supervisor and others as required to indicate status and progress of work.
  • All Facilities employees are expected to exercise behavior in accordance with University policies as well as with the Facilities Mission and Statement of Core Values.
  • All Facilities employees are expected to comply with safety standards and demonstrate safe work habits.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be capable of climbing ladders up to 60' heights. Must be capable of working from an aerial lift. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to work outdoors in often rainy, harsh conditions including extreme hot and cold.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Performance criteria during 3 year Apprenticeship Program:

Year 1:

  • Must have complete understanding of tools and equipment per safety guidelines.
  • Must have the ability to identify all roof types.
  • Must be able to perform roof maintenance inspections per our PM program.
  • Must become trained and certified to operate man lift.

Year 2:

  • Must be able to respond to roof work orders pertaining to leaks independently.
  • Must have the ability to complete slate and asphalt shingle repairs.
  • Must have the ability to locate roof leaks in all flat roof membranes and have the ability to make the repairs per manufacturers’ specifications.

Year 3:

  • Must have the ability and confidence to act as a University of Richmond representative in overseeing and inspecting roof projects performed by contractors.
  • Must have the ability to construct copper flashings and leader heads and gutters per requirements.
  • Familiarity with reading architectural drawings.
  • Have experience using a metal brake to properly bend and form flashings.
  • Must have the ability to make necessary repairs and replace as needed all types of built-up roofs and totally adhered systems.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; 8 hrs./day; 40 hrs./week
  • All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and are subject to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 4 (Hiring Range $15.46 to $20.49 per hour)
