The Division of General Pediatrics of the East Carolina University School of Medicine is the organizational unit. The primary purpose of the Pediatric Department is teaching, research and patient care in those issues involving the needs of children, with particular emphasis on the children of eastern North Carolina. TEDI BEAR Children’s Advocacy Center specializes in
child abuse and neglect and provides: 1) comprehensive evaluation of children who have been referred because of suspected abuse and/or neglect; 2) evidence-based interventions for abused children and their non-offending caregivers through therapy and clinical case management; 3) community support and resources to build and strengthen inter-agency response and interventions for children at risk for abuse or neglect; 4) education and training for professionals, students, and the community at large within Eastern North Carolina in the areas of child abuse evaluation, intervention, treatment, and prevention; 5) advocacy and influencing policy development to promote the health and wellness of abused and neglected children.

Job Duties

The Social Worker/Child Advocate will provide assessment and/or advocacy following allegations of child abuse and severe neglect to promote and strengthen improved outcomes for children. Work with other TEDI BEAR assessment team members including Advocates and Medical Providers providing social work services and assessments by gathering information from children and caregivers. Collaborate with other agency professionals to include county department of social services case workers, law enforcement officers, and other outside resources to obtain additional details and background relative to the case being evaluated. Information obtained through this assessment process will be channeled through the medical personnel on the team, and to the professionals involved for the team’s total evaluation and ultimate case disposition. Provide coordination of TEDI BEAR CAC assessment services including scheduling patients who have been referred to the clinic, and arranging regular meetings of the team. Maintaining information in clinic database and generating written reports, and forwarding reports to professionals in timely manner.

As Child Advocate will establish rapport with victims and provide opportunity for medical play and preparation for medical exam with actual medical equipment to educate patient/victim in a developmentally appropriate manner to help diffuse unrealistic fears and anxieties. Interpret child’s perception of clinic visit as revealed through play and other means of communication, including verbal and nonverbal. Provide developmental screenings based on observation and/or standardized scales. Provide consultation to the team regarding developmental status and individual needs of children to promote coping during the evaluation phase. Provide assurance to children and caregivers through instruction and information. Use appropriate methods for preparing children and families for diagnostic procedures. Provide emotional support during identified stress points in the evaluation process. Utilize stress reduction techniques to facilitate adaptive coping. Extend support and offer counseling to family members with respect to their own stress and needs (i.e. provision of emotional support and education including activities and therapeutic play for siblings). Provide opportunities for and facilitate a variety of play and activity forms which promote self-healing, self-expression, understanding and mastery. Assist in patient information management through use of database and case file. Collecting data regarding hospital consults and evaluation outcomes of children seen for evaluations. Provide victim advocacy services to children and their non-offending caregivers through dissemination of information regarding victim services in their respective communities. Assist caregivers through completing necessary documentation and providing notary services for access to Crimes Compensation.

Will function as a team member of TEDI BEAR including assisting other staff in screening referrals, answering the telephone, greeting persons arriving at the center. Attend team meetings, training of volunteers, and assist in community training and MDT efforts to help recognize and report child abuse and promote awareness of services available for alleged child victims at TEDI BEAR.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Candidates must have professional experience working with children and families.

Ideal candidate will possess:
- advanced knowledge of child development
- demonstrated ability to build rapport and work with children from diverse backgrounds and children who have special needs
- experience working within a team setting promoting collaboration and coordination of services
