Basic Function

The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.

Duties and Responsibilities

The English department in the Languages, Arts, and Social Sciences division at the Alexandria campus is seeking qualified full­time faculty to teach composition, literature, and creative writing courses, with a primary emphasis on composition courses. The College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and College duties including serving on division/campus/college committees and participate in curriculum development; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students. Faculty members must be able to teach in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in English, Composition/Rhetoric/Writing Studies and experience with and preparation for teaching culturally, linguistically, socioeconomically, and academically diverse students at the college­ level. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in English College level teaching experience and/or relevant work experience. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary scholarship in Composition/Rhetoric/Writing Studies (e.g. graduate coursework/degrees, conference presentations, publications, professional development); experience teaching introductory Composition courses to diverse learners at a two­ year college; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission of the two­ year college; demonstrated commitment to service and collaboration. Experience teaching hybrid and online formats. Experience teaching developmental English.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated teaching ability at the community college level and/or four­year college level; familiarity with instructional technologies; ability to speak and write well;Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. demonstrated commitment to advising students; experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA.
